Southern Air Command, IAF Joins Indian Navy in Bidding Farewell to INS Magar

Kochi, May 6, 2023 – The Southern Air Command, Indian Air Force (IAF) has joined the Indian Navy in bidding a fond farewell to INS Magar. The illustrious ship was decommissioned at Kochi today after serving the nation for 36 years.

INS Magar was a shining beacon of Triservices integration and interoperability, and her decommissioning marks the end of an era. The ship had a distinguished service record and played a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.

To commemorate the occasion, a special ceremony was held at the Naval Base in Kochi. The ship’s timeline on her illustrious service was released, showcasing the key milestones in her remarkable journey. Additionally, a special cover was released to honor the ship’s legacy.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command (SNC), Air Marshal B Manikantan, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Air Command (SAC), and the Chief Post Master General of Kerala.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi said, “INS Magar was an integral part of the Indian Navy and played a significant role in safeguarding our nation’s maritime interests. Her decommissioning marks the end of an era, but her legacy will live on.”

Air Marshal B Manikantan added, “The Southern Air Command, Indian Air Force, is honored to be a part of this momentous occasion. INS Magar was an epitome of triservices integration and interoperability, and her contributions to the nation will always be remembered.”

INS Magar was commissioned on 22 November 1987 and was involved in several critical operations during her service, including Operation Pawan and Operation Vijay. Her decommissioning is a solemn occasion, but it also marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Indian Navy’s history.
