Railway Board Chairman Inspects USBRL Project in Jammu and Kashmir, Urges Accelerated Progress

Jaya Varma Sinha, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Board, led a comprehensive review of the ongoing progress of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project during a visit to Jammu and Kashmir on February 9, 2024. Accompanied by a delegation including Shobhan Chaudhuri, General Manager of Northern Railway, and other senior officials, Sinha emphasized the significance of expediting the remaining work on the project to connect the Kashmir Valley to the wider railway network.

The inspection commenced from Katra to Tunnel No. T-33 (old T-1), with Sinha conducting thorough examinations via motor trolley and on foot. Despite challenging geological conditions, Sinha commended the project team for their diligent efforts and underscored the importance of adhering to safety protocols. She instructed project authorities to redouble their efforts to ensure timely completion, particularly for the Katra-Reasi section linkage.

Continuing the inspection through Tunnel T-34 (old T-2) and beyond, Sinha assessed the progress of critical works including track, electrical and mechanical systems, signaling, and railway engineering. She expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work, particularly at key sites such as the Chenab Bridge.

During a review session at the Chenab Bridge site with officials from Northern Railway, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), and IRCON, Sinha lauded the progress made while stressing the importance of closely monitoring remaining tasks. She highlighted Tunnel T-1 and Sawalkote yard works as areas requiring special attention to avoid any delays.

Despite facing various challenges including geological, topographical, and meteorological obstacles, work on the remaining portions of the USBRL project is progressing steadily. Each day brings the Indian Railway closer to achieving the milestone of connecting the Kashmir Valley to the broader railway network.
