PM Narendra Modi Launches Assam’s First Vande Bharat Express, Inaugurates Infrastructure Projects

In a significant development for the connectivity of Northeast India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off Assam’s first Vande Bharat Express via video conferencing today. The high-speed train will connect Guwahati with New Jalpaiguri, reducing travel time by approximately an hour compared to the existing fastest train. The inaugural journey is expected to take 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Alongside the Vande Bharat Express launch, Prime Minister Modi dedicated 182 route kilometers of newly electrified sections and inaugurated a state-of-the-art DEMU/MEMU shed in Lumding, Assam. These infrastructure projects aim to enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and provide a more comfortable travel experience for the people of the region.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister emphasized the significance of the day, as three major development works were accomplished simultaneously. Firstly, he highlighted that the Northeast region is getting its first Vande Bharat Express, which will strengthen the historic ties between Assam and West Bengal. Secondly, approximately 425 kilometers of railway tracks in Assam and Meghalaya have been electrified, enabling faster and more eco-friendly transportation. Thirdly, the inauguration of the new DEMU/MEMU shed in Lumding will improve the operational feasibility of the region’s rail network.

Prime Minister Modi underscored the transformative impact of the newly launched train, stating that it will provide convenient access to prominent tourist destinations such as the Maa Kamakhya Temple, Kaziranga, Manas National Park, and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. He also highlighted its potential to boost travel and tourism in places like Shillong, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, and Tawang and Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh.

Reflecting on the accomplishments of his government over the past nine years, the Prime Minister emphasized the unprecedented development and progress towards building a new India. He mentioned notable projects like the newly inaugurated Parliament House and highlighted the government’s focus on welfare initiatives for the poor. The Prime Minister emphasized that infrastructure development is a vital aspect of social justice and secularism, ensuring equal access and opportunities for all sections of society.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the significant impact of infrastructure development in Eastern and Northeastern India, particularly in uplifting states that were previously underserved. He reiterated his commitment to prioritizing the sensitivities and facilities of the Northeast region, citing the substantial increase in railway budgets and ongoing projects to connect all capital cities with a broad gauge network.

The Prime Minister praised the railways’ role in connecting people, fostering social harmony, and providing opportunities. He emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusive development, as demonstrated by initiatives like setting up stalls promoting local products and services at railway stations and providing Wi-Fi facilities across the Northeast.

The launch of Assam’s first Vande Bharat Express and the inauguration of the electrified sections and DEMU/MEMU shed mark significant milestones in the region’s infrastructure development. These projects will not only improve connectivity but also contribute to economic growth and upliftment of the people in Northeast India. With a focus on speed, sensitivity, and progress, the government aims to pave the way for a developed and prosperous India.
