PM Modi Flags Off India’s First Indigenous Hydrogen-Powered Train, Calls It a Milestone for Green Mobility
Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first indigenously developed hydrogen-powered train between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, describing it as a landmark achievement in the country’s journey towards sustainable, clean and future-ready transportation. The launch marks a major step in Indian Railways’ efforts to adopt green technologies while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Sharing photographs and videos from the event on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said the inauguration represents a significant leap towards green mobility and reflects the innovation, engineering capabilities and dedication of the Indian Railways team.
“India takes a major leap towards green mobility. In Jind, flagged off India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train between Jind and Sonipat. This remarkable achievement reflects the ingenuity and dedication of the Indian Railways team. It is a proud symbol of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and our commitment to cleaner, future-ready transportation,” the Prime Minister posted.
The hydrogen-powered train is the first of its kind to be developed indigenously in India and is expected to play an important role in reducing carbon emissions from the railway sector. Powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology, the train produces electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapour as a by-product. The technology offers a clean alternative to diesel-powered trains and supports India’s broader objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
In another post in Hindi, Prime Minister Modi said he felt proud to flag off the country’s first hydrogen train from Jind, calling it a major achievement in building a clean, green and self-reliant India.
He said the train, built using advanced technology, is not only a symbol of India’s growing technological capability but also an example for the rest of the world. According to the Prime Minister, the introduction of hydrogen-powered rail transport demonstrates India’s ability to develop cutting-edge indigenous technologies while strengthening its commitment to sustainable development.
The Prime Minister also noted that the launch of the hydrogen train between Jind and Sonipat represents a major step towards embracing 21st-century transportation technology. He said every Indian would feel proud after learning about the train’s technological capabilities and its potential contribution to environmentally friendly mobility.
Hydrogen-powered trains are increasingly being viewed worldwide as a viable solution for rail routes where electrification is either difficult or economically unviable. By replacing diesel locomotives on such routes, hydrogen trains can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency while maintaining operational performance.
The launch aligns with Indian Railways’ long-term strategy to modernise its network using cleaner energy sources. Along with large-scale electrification of railway routes, the national transporter has been investing in hydrogen fuel cell technology, renewable energy and other green initiatives to make rail transport more sustainable.
During his address, the Prime Minister also linked the development to India’s broader energy security strategy. He said that had the situation remained as it was before 2014, global oil crises could have severely affected railway operations. He asserted that his government focuses on anticipating future challenges and implementing practical solutions in advance, the benefits of which are now visible across multiple sectors, including transportation.
Apart from inaugurating the hydrogen train, Prime Minister Modi participated in the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony for several development projects in Jind. He expressed happiness over the enthusiastic response from the people of Haryana, describing the state as a land known for its rich historical heritage, martial traditions and spiritual significance.
The Prime Minister also praised Haryana’s efforts in promoting sports and said the state’s double-engine government is providing every possible facility to its young athletes. He urged the youth to continue preparing with dedication for upcoming national and international sporting events.
