Mumbai–Konkan Rail Connectivity Gets Major Boost as New CSMT–Sawantwadi Express Flagged Off
Rail connectivity between Mumbai and the Konkan region received a significant boost on Thursday with the inauguration of a new daily train service between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Sawantwadi Road.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with other dignitaries, flagged off the inaugural service from CSMT. The new train is expected to provide an important additional rail link for passengers travelling between Mumbai and several key destinations across Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.
The approximately 510-km-long service has been introduced at a particularly important time, ahead of the Ganesh Utsav, when thousands of people travel from Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra to their native places in the Konkan region.
New Daily Train Connects Mumbai With Konkan
The new service will operate daily as Train No. 15087 CSMT–Sawantwadi Road Express and Train No. 15088 Sawantwadi Road–CSMT Express.
The train will leave CSMT at 11:55 PM and reach Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 PM the following day. On the return journey, it will depart from Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 PM and arrive at CSMT at 6:40 AM the next morning.

The overnight journey from Mumbai towards Konkan is expected to make the service particularly convenient for families, workers, students and regular travellers.
The train will operate with an LHB rake, offering passengers modern passenger coaches and improved travel comfort.
Wide Network of Stops Across Konkan
One of the major advantages of the new service is its extensive stoppage pattern. The train will connect Mumbai with several important towns and railway stations across the Konkan belt.
The stations include Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Pen, Roha, Mangaon, Veer, Khed, Chiplun, Savarda, Aravali Road, Sangameshwar Road, Ratnagiri, Adavali, Vilavade, Rajapur Road, Vaibhavwadi Road, Nandgaon, Kankavli, Sindhudurg, Kudal and Sawantwadi Road.
This connectivity is expected to benefit passengers travelling not only to Sawantwadi but also to a large number of towns and villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.
The service also provides an additional travel option during periods of high passenger demand, particularly around festivals, holidays and the tourism season.
Railway Minister Highlights Ganesh Utsav Arrangements
Speaking at the event, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the new service fulfils a long-standing demand of people from Mumbai and the Konkan region.
The minister also highlighted the extensive arrangements being made by Indian Railways for passenger movement during Ganesh Utsav.
According to Vaishnaw, around 350 special trains are being operated this year to handle the additional passenger demand. He said the number could be increased to 370 trains, if required, depending on passenger demand.
The additional services are particularly significant because the Mumbai–Konkan corridor witnesses heavy passenger movement during the festival period, with large numbers of people returning to their hometowns.
Piyush Goyal: New Train Will Support Konkan’s Development
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described the new daily train as an important milestone in the development of the Konkan region.
He said improved rail connectivity would make travel between Mumbai and Konkan safer, faster and more convenient, benefiting lakhs of families.
Goyal also underlined the economic importance of stronger transportation links. As freight movement increases along the railway network, local producers, including fishermen, are expected to gain better access to the Mumbai market.
Faster movement of agricultural, fisheries and other locally produced goods could help expand market opportunities for businesses in Konkan.
The minister also said improved connectivity could contribute to employment generation in the region and reduce the need for young people to migrate to larger cities in search of work.
Students, Employees and Families to Benefit
The new service is expected to have benefits beyond tourism and festival travel.
A significant number of people from the Konkan region study or work in Mumbai. The additional train service could make it easier for them to maintain regular contact with their families while continuing their education or employment in the city.
Improved connectivity will also make Mumbai’s healthcare and higher education facilities more accessible to people living in the Konkan region.
For families, the service could provide another dependable option for travelling between Mumbai and their native places.
Boost to Tourism in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg
The new train is also expected to strengthen tourism in the Konkan region.
Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kankavli, Kudal and Sawantwadi are important gateways to several tourist destinations. Better rail connectivity can make these destinations more accessible to visitors from Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.
The increase in tourist movement could benefit local hotels, restaurants, transport operators, guides, shops and other tourism-related businesses.
The service could therefore play a role not only in improving passenger mobility but also in strengthening the local economy.
Konkan Railway Electrification Completed
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde described the new service as a major gift for the people of Konkan, migrant workers and devotees travelling to their hometowns during Ganesh Utsav.
Shinde also highlighted the completion of electrification of the 741-km Konkan Railway route.
Electrification is expected to contribute to more environmentally friendly railway operations while also supporting improvements in train speeds and operational efficiency.
He also pointed to several major railway initiatives in Maharashtra and across the country, including the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project and the expansion of Vande Bharat services.
Mumbai Suburban Railway to Get Major Capacity Boost
The inauguration of the Konkan train was also accompanied by updates on major railway infrastructure projects in Mumbai.
Railway Minister Vaishnaw said railway projects worth around ₹18,000 crore are currently underway in Mumbai.
A major focus is increasing the capacity of the suburban railway network. According to the minister, platforms designed for 12-coach trains are being extended to accommodate 15-coach trains.
Such extensions have already been completed at several locations and are expected to increase passenger-carrying capacity on Mumbai’s suburban network.
The Railways is also upgrading the existing signalling infrastructure with modern signalling technology, aimed at improving the capacity, efficiency and reliability of suburban train operations.
238 New AC Local Train Rakes Sanctioned
Another major announcement concerns Mumbai’s air-conditioned suburban trains.
The Railway Ministry has sanctioned 238 new AC local train rakes to meet Mumbai’s growing transportation requirements.
Vaishnaw said delivery of the first new AC local train will begin in 2027.
The expansion is expected to introduce more modern trains into Mumbai’s suburban system while improving passenger comfort and capacity.
For millions of daily commuters, the modernization of the suburban network is expected to be an important component of Mumbai’s broader transportation infrastructure upgrade.
Dedicated Freight Corridors Reach Full Completion
The Railway Minister also highlighted progress on India’s Dedicated Freight Corridor network.
Vaishnaw said both the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors are now 100 per cent complete.
He also referred to the Union Budget announcement regarding a new East–West Dedicated Freight Corridor.
The proposed corridor is being designed between Dankuni and Surat and is expected to provide connectivity to important regions of Maharashtra, including Vidarbha, Marathwada and Western Maharashtra.
The planned network would also provide connectivity towards Wardha and the port at Nashik, potentially strengthening freight movement and supporting industrial and rural economic development.
Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Progress
Vaishnaw also provided an update on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project.
He said construction work is progressing rapidly and highlighted the ongoing development of an undersea rail tunnel connecting BKC and Thane.
Two tunnel boring machines, operating from Vikhroli and Ghansoli, are currently engaged in construction activities for the tunnel.
The high-speed rail project is expected to significantly transform inter-city connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad once operational.
New Train Strengthens Mumbai–Konkan Link
The launch of the CSMT–Sawantwadi Road Express comes at a crucial time for Maharashtra’s transport network. With a route covering around 510 km and stops across major parts of the Konkan belt, the service is expected to strengthen the movement of passengers between Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.
Its daily operation, overnight travel schedule and wide stoppage network could make it particularly useful for families, students, employees, tourists and traders.
With additional festival trains, Konkan Railway electrification, Mumbai suburban capacity expansion, new AC locals and major freight and high-speed rail projects progressing simultaneously, the latest train service forms part of a broader push to improve rail connectivity, passenger capacity and economic linkages across Maharashtra.
