Milestone Achieved: Bhairabi-Sairang Railway Line Surges Ahead with 91% Overall Progress
In a significant stride towards enhancing rail connectivity, the Bhairabi-Sairang Railway Line Project in Mizoram is making remarkable progress, with an overall completion rate of 91%. The ambitious venture, spearheaded by the Northeast Frontier Railway zone of Indian Railways, aims to seamlessly link Bairabi station to Sairang.
Project Highlights:
- Total Length: The Bhairabi-Sairang Railway Line spans a distance of 51.38 km.
- Bridge Works Completion:
- Major Bridges: 12 out of 55 completed
- Minor Bridges: 85 out of 87 completed
- ROB/RUB (Road Over Bridges/Road Under Bridges): 7 out of 9 completed
- Tunnels Progress:
- Tunnels Constructed: 12,710m out of 12,853m
- Overall Project Status: With 91% of the project already accomplished, the Bhairabi-Sairang Railway Line is making substantial headway.
Future Infrastructure:
- The rail link necessitates the construction of essential components:
- Bridges: A total of 204 bridges
- Tunnels: 24 tunnels
- Stations: Four strategically located stations
Strategic Expansion:
- The railway project serves as a vital component of the Indian Railways’ strategic expansion plan, fostering connectivity and accessibility in the northeastern region.
Future Prospects:
- In August 2015, Indian Railways conducted a comprehensive survey for a potential extension from Sairang to Hmawngbuchhuah, located on Mizoram’s southern tip bordering Myanmar. This extension aligns with the ‘Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP)’ road, entering Myanmar at nearby Zochachhuah.
- Notably, Indian Railways has already converted the existing 84 km rail line from Katakhal (Assam) to Bairabi, penetrating 2 km inside Mizoram, laying the groundwork for seamless rail connectivity.
As the Bhairabi-Sairang Railway Line progresses steadily, it emerges as a testament to India’s commitment to bolstering infrastructure and connectivity, particularly in the northeastern states. The project holds the promise of unlocking new economic opportunities and facilitating smoother transportation across the region.
