Indian Railways Reaches Rowghat for the First Time Since Independence; New Lines and Passenger Services Inaugurated in Chhattisgarh

₹1,628-crore Dalli Rajhara–Rowghat railway project completed; Raipur–Rowghat travel fare set at ₹55; electric locomotive maintenance facility planned in Raipur

Indian Railways has achieved a major milestone in Chhattisgarh with the completion of rail connectivity to Rowghat for the first time since Independence. The development marks a significant step towards connecting remote areas of southern Chhattisgarh with the railway network, improving passenger mobility and supporting the region’s industrial and economic growth.

The Tadoki–Rowghat and Abhanpur–Kurud broad-gauge railway lines were inaugurated in the presence of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, while Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw participated in the programme through video conferencing. New passenger train services on the Rowghat–Raipur and Raipur–Kurud routes were flagged off during the event.

The programme also included the foundation stone laying for an electric locomotive maintenance facility in Raipur, which is planned to develop maintenance capacity for 300 high-horsepower electric locomotives.

Together, these initiatives are expected to strengthen rail connectivity, improve access to education and healthcare, facilitate daily commuting and provide fresh impetus to industrial development in Chhattisgarh.

Rowghat Rail Connectivity: A Historic Milestone for Southern Chhattisgarh

The completion of the Dalli Rajhara–Rowghat new railway line is a major development for the state’s remote and mineral-rich regions. The 95-kilometre railway line between Dalli Rajhara and Rowghat has been completed at a cost of ₹1,628 crore. The final 17.5-kilometre section between Tadoki and Rowghat has now been completed, establishing rail connectivity to Rowghat.

For communities in this part of southern Chhattisgarh, the arrival of trains is expected to make travel more convenient and improve access to essential services. Residents will have better opportunities to travel for education, medical treatment, employment, trade and other needs.

The railway line is also strategically important for the region’s industrial development. Rowghat is known for its iron ore resources, and improved rail connectivity is expected to facilitate the movement of iron ore to industrial destinations, including the Bhilai Steel Plant.

Rail-based transportation can offer a more efficient means of moving bulk raw materials, supporting the requirements of the iron and steel industry. Better connectivity may also encourage economic activity and create opportunities related to transportation, trade and other local services.

The project therefore represents both a passenger connectivity initiative and an important infrastructure investment for the industrial development of Chhattisgarh.

Abhanpur–Kurud Broad-Gauge Line to Improve Regional Connectivity

The inauguration of the Abhanpur–Kurud broad-gauge railway line marks another important step in expanding rail services across Chhattisgarh.

The work forms part of the gauge-conversion programme covering the Kendri–Dhamtari and Abhanpur–Rajim sections. Passenger services between Abhanpur and Rajim have already commenced following the completion of the relevant section.

Under the Abhanpur–Dhamtari gauge-conversion project, the 22-kilometre Abhanpur–Kurud section has now been converted to broad gauge. Work on the remaining Kurud–Dhamtari section is in progress and is expected to be completed in the near future.

The upgraded line is expected to improve travel options for residents of Kurud and neighbouring areas, particularly those travelling to Raipur for work, education, healthcare and commercial activities.

Improved rail access could also benefit farmers, traders and other rural communities by providing an additional transport option for reaching larger markets and accessing services in the state capital.

Once the remaining section is completed, the wider gauge-conversion project is expected to further strengthen connectivity across the region.

New Rowghat–Raipur and Raipur–Kurud Passenger Services

The launch of the new Rowghat–Raipur and Raipur–Kurud passenger train services is expected to provide significant relief to people travelling between the remote areas of Chhattisgarh and the state capital.

Students, job seekers, employees, farmers, traders and other passengers are among those expected to benefit from the new services. Direct rail connectivity can reduce the difficulties associated with road travel and provide a more accessible transport option for people who regularly visit Raipur.

For students, improved connectivity can make educational institutions more accessible. Working professionals and job seekers may find it easier to travel for employment-related activities, while patients and their families can benefit from improved access to healthcare facilities in the capital.

The services are also expected to support commercial exchanges between rural areas and urban markets. Farmers and traders may gain from better access to buyers, while easier travel could encourage tourism and other economic activities.

One of the key highlights is the announced fare of just ₹55 for travel between Raipur and Rowghat. The affordable fare is expected to make rail travel accessible to students, daily commuters and passengers from economically weaker sections.

The introduction of these services is part of the broader effort to extend the benefits of railway infrastructure to communities that have historically had limited access to rail transport.

Raipur to Get Electric Locomotive Maintenance Facility

Another major announcement at the event was the foundation stone laying for an electric locomotive maintenance facility in Raipur.

The proposed facility is planned to have the capacity to maintain 300 high-horsepower electric locomotives. Its development is expected to strengthen railway maintenance infrastructure and support the growing operational requirements of Indian Railways.

Electric locomotives play a crucial role in passenger and freight operations across the country. As railway electrification expands and freight movement grows, adequate maintenance facilities become increasingly important for ensuring locomotive availability and reliable operations.

The Raipur facility is expected to help meet maintenance requirements, improve the availability of electric locomotives and support smoother train operations. It could also strengthen the railway network’s capacity to handle the movement of industrial goods and other freight.

The project adds to the infrastructure being developed to support the long-term expansion of railway operations in Chhattisgarh.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai Highlights Rail Investment

Addressing the programme, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on behalf of the people of Chhattisgarh for the inauguration of the railway lines and the launch of the new passenger services.

He said railway development and infrastructure projects in the state were progressing under the Prime Minister’s leadership.

According to the Chief Minister, Chhattisgarh received more than ₹7,000 crore under the railway budget for the year, reflecting the Centre’s focus on expanding railway infrastructure, improving connectivity and developing passenger facilities.

He expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated projects would improve access to remote areas and accelerate industrial, commercial and socio-economic development.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of railway connectivity in supporting the state’s development priorities and improving transportation options for its residents.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Outlines Wider Development Plans

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated the people of Chhattisgarh on the inauguration of the railway lines and the introduction of the new passenger services.

He said Indian Railways was expanding infrastructure in the state under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Among the projects highlighted were the Dalli Rajhara–Rowghat new railway line, gauge conversion across the Kendri–Abhanpur–Rajim–Dhamtari corridor and various multitracking initiatives.

Work is also underway on the Kharsia–Parmalakasa double-line project. In addition, the Pendra Road–Bilaspur–Uslapur third railway line has recently received Cabinet approval, according to the information shared at the programme.

These projects are expected to increase railway capacity, strengthen connectivity and support the movement of passengers and freight. Additional line capacity can also help accommodate growing traffic demand and improve operational flexibility.

The minister emphasised the role of railway infrastructure in promoting industrial and economic growth while improving passenger facilities.

Public Representatives Attend Inauguration

Several public representatives attended the programme at different locations.

At Raipur railway station, MPs Lakshmi Verma, Brijmohan Agrawal and Roopkumari Choudhary were present, along with MLAs Rajesh Moonat, Purandar Mishra and Motilal Sahu.

At Rowghat railway station, MP Bhojraj Nag, MLA Vikram Usendi and other dignitaries attended the event.

A New Chapter in Chhattisgarh’s Railway Development

The inauguration of the Tadoki–Rowghat and Abhanpur–Kurud broad-gauge lines, the launch of the Rowghat–Raipur and Raipur–Kurud passenger services, and the proposed electric locomotive maintenance facility represent important additions to Chhattisgarh’s railway infrastructure.

The arrival of rail connectivity at Rowghat is particularly significant for southern Chhattisgarh, where improved transportation is expected to benefit local communities and support the movement of mineral resources.

With further gauge-conversion, doubling and third-line projects progressing across the state, Indian Railways is working to expand network capacity and improve connectivity.

The long-term benefits will depend on the effective operation of the new services, completion of the remaining railway works and the extent to which local communities and industries can access the expanded network.
