Cyclone Biparjoy Alters Course, to Cross Kachchh Saurashtra Coast by June 15th

In a significant development, the previously categorized Very Severe Cyclonic Storm “Biparjoy” (pronounced as “Biporjoy”) has now intensified into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm over the eastcentral Arabian Sea. As of 11th June 2023, the storm is rapidly progressing north-northeastwards at a speed of 9 kmph over the same region. The storm’s center was observed at 0530 hours IST, near latitude 17.9°N and longitude 67.4°E, approximately 580 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 480 km south-southwest of Porbandar, 530 km south-southwest of Dwarka, 610 km south-southwest of Naliya, and 780 km south of Karachi (Pakistan).

Experts predict that the Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm “Biparjoy” will continue its northward trajectory until the morning of the 14th of June. Subsequently, it is expected to shift towards a north-northeast direction and make landfall between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) around noon on the 15th of June. At the time of landfall, “Biparjoy” is anticipated to retain its status as a very severe cyclonic storm, with sustained winds ranging from 125-135 kmph and gusts up to 150 kmph.

Authorities and local communities in the regions of Saurashtra, Kutch, and adjoining Pakistan coasts have been alerted to the potential impact of the approaching cyclone. Preparations are underway to minimize potential damage and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.
