Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Biparjoy’ Set to Make Landfall Near Jakhau Port, Gujarat

In a recent update, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a cyclone warning for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts as an extremely severe cyclonic storm named “Biparjoy” intensifies over the east-central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea.The storm, pronounced as “Biporjoy,” has been moving northwards with a speed of 5 kmph over the past six hours.

The cyclonic storm is expected to continue moving northward until the morning of June 14, after which it will shift towards a north-northeast direction. By noon on June 15, “Biparjoy” is projected to make landfall between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan), specifically near Jakhau Port (Gujarat). It is expected to hit the region as a very severe cyclonic storm, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 125-135 kmph, gusting up to 150 kmph.

The forecast track and intensity of the cyclonic disturbance have been outlined by the India Meteorological Department. Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for several districts in Gujarat, including Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Junagarh, and Morbi. The intensity of rainfall is expected to increase, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and isolated instances of extremely heavy falls in certain areas.

The wind warnings indicate gale wind speeds reaching 165-175 kmph, gusting to 195 kmph over the northeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea. Squally wind speeds are also expected in the region. Sea conditions are predicted to be rough, and a storm surge of about 2-3 meters above the astronomical tide is likely to affect low-lying areas of Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, and Morbi districts during landfall.

Precautionary measures have been advised, including the suspension of fishing operations and the evacuation of coastal areas. The authorities have urged people to stay indoors and take necessary precautions to minimize the potential damage caused by the cyclone.
