Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari Reviews Progress of LCA Programme at Air Headquarters
New Delhi – The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, led a comprehensive review of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme at Air Headquarters yesterday. Esteemed attendees included high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Defence, DRDO, HAL, and ADA.
In his opening remarks, CAS highlighted the pivotal role of the LCA as a flagship endeavor in the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) pursuit of indigenous aircraft fleet development. Recognizing its national significance, he stressed the importance of a collaborative approach among all stakeholders to ensure the triumph of this endeavor. The LCA programme not only aligns with the nation’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives but also embodies India’s strides toward aerospace self-reliance.
A comprehensive overview during the review highlighted the successful delivery of all contracted fighter variants of the LCA Mk 1 to the IAF. Representatives from HAL assured CAS of the on-time delivery of contracted twin-seater variants in the upcoming months. Building on the achievements of LCA Mk 1, the IAF entered a contract in 2021 for 83 LCA Mk-1A aircraft. The Chairman & Managing Director of HAL committed to initiating deliveries of this advanced variant by February 2024.
Expressing commendation for HAL’s dedication, CAS proposed the induction of LCA Mk 1A into a newly established squadron at one of the IAF’s operational bases early next year, based on the commitments received. Despite certain project delays discussed during the review, CAS acknowledged the collective efforts of stakeholders and emphasized the integration of lessons from the LCA programme into future indigenous Design & Developmental projects. Anticipating the timely rollout of the enhanced LCA Mk 1A variant, its heightened presence at forward bases and participation in international exercises are anticipated in the near future.
