Prime Minister Narendra Modi Leads the 9th Annual International Day of Yoga at UN Headquarters
New York City’s iconic North Lawn at the United Nations Headquarters became the vibrant venue for the 9th annual International Day of Yoga celebrations on June 21, 2023. Guiding the proceedings was none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.
Under the theme “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – signifying “One Earth · One Family · One Future” – the event attracted an overwhelming response from thousands of yoga enthusiasts representing more than 135 nationalities. This remarkable participation led to the establishment of a Guinness World Record for the highest number of nationalities participating in a single Yoga session. Attendees were treated to a special video message from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The event witnessed the esteemed presence of numerous dignitaries and renowned personalities from various spheres, including diplomats, officials, academics, healthcare professionals, technocrats, industry leaders, media figures, artists, spiritual leaders, and yoga practitioners. Notable figures in attendance included H.E. Mr. Csaba Korosi, President of the 77th United Nations General Assembly; Mr. Eric Adams, Mayor of New York City; and H.E. Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group.
Before commencing the yoga session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s bust, which was unveiled during India’s UNSC Presidency in December 2022. Additionally, he honored a Peacekeeping Memorial located on the North Lawn, demonstrating his reverence for peace and harmony.
The International Day of Yoga celebration led by Prime Minister Modi at the UN Headquarters showcased the global enthusiasm for yoga as a unifying practice and highlighted its transformative impact on individuals and communities around the world.
