PM Modi Set to Embark on Significant South Africa and Greece Tours
In a recent announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed his forthcoming diplomatic missions to the Republic of South Africa and Greece. The trip, scheduled from August 22 to August 24, 2023, to South Africa, comes in response to an invitation extended by Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa. The primary focus of this visit is the participation in the 15th BRICS Summit, hosted in Johannesburg as part of South Africa’s Chairmanship.
BRICS, the alliance of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has emerged as a powerful platform for cross-sectoral collaboration. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of BRICS as a forum addressing critical issues affecting the Global South. These include developmental priorities and reforms within the multilateral framework. The upcoming summit will serve as a pivotal moment for BRICS nations to identify new avenues for cooperation and assess the progress of their institutions.
Additionally, during his stay in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Modi will actively participate in the BRICS–Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue event. This event, aligned with the BRICS Summit, will bring together a diverse array of guest countries, further broadening the scope for international engagement.
Prime Minister Modi also expressed his enthusiasm for engaging in bilateral discussions with several world leaders attending the Johannesburg summit, affirming his commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties.
Following his visit to South Africa, on August 25, 2023, Prime Minister Modi will embark on a historic journey to Athens, Greece, accepting an invitation from H.E. Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece. This visit holds exceptional significance as it marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has set foot in Greece in four decades.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the enduring connection between India and Greece, rooted in a shared history spanning over two millennia. In contemporary times, both nations have bolstered their ties through their mutual commitment to democratic values, the rule of law, and pluralism. Collaboration across various sectors, including trade, investment, defense, culture, and people-to-people exchanges, has brought India and Greece closer together.
