Indian Railways Achieves Record Freight Loading and Revenue in the First Two Quarters of 2023
New Delhi, October 3, 2023 – In a remarkable display of efficiency and growth, Indian Railways has reported significant achievements in its freight operations for the first two quarters of 2023. These achievements underscore the railway’s commitment to delivering excellence in cargo transportation services.
During the period from April to September 2023, Indian Railways accomplished a substantial freight loading of 758.20 million tonnes (MT). This represents a substantial increase of approximately 21.52 MT compared to the corresponding period last year. This exceptional performance not only reflects the railway’s robust capabilities but also its contribution to the nation’s economic development.
The financial gains from this surge in freight loading have been equally impressive. Indian Railways recorded revenues of Rs 81,697 crore from freight loading during the April to September 2023 period. This marks a significant increase of approximately Rs 2,706 crores compared to the same period last year, showcasing the railways’ financial resilience and growth.
In the month of September 2023 alone, Indian Railways achieved a freight loading of 123.53 MT, marking a notable improvement of approximately 6.67% over the freight loading for the same month in the previous year. This remarkable performance is a testament to the railway’s dedication to consistently improving its services.
The freight earnings for September 2023 amounted to Rs 12,956.95 crores, reflecting a commendable increase of about 5.06% over the earnings in September 2022. This increase in revenue demonstrates the railways’ ability to deliver results while maintaining competitiveness in the market.

- 14.29 MT in Iron Ore
- 5.78 MT in Pig Iron and Finished Steel
- 6.25 MT in Cement (Excluding Clinker)
- 4.89 MT in Clinker
- 4.54 MT in Foodgrains
- 4.23 MT in Fertilizers
- 4.0 MT in Mineral Oil
- 7.28 MT in Containers
- 10.10 MT in Other Goods
