Six Wagons of Goods Train Derail Between Ghaziabad and New Delhi; 53 Trains Affected, Services Diverted and Cancelled
Rail traffic on one of the busiest sections of the Indian Railways network was severely disrupted on Tuesday after six loaded wagons of a goods train derailed between Ghaziabad and New Delhi in the Delhi Division. The derailment led to widespread operational changes, affecting 53 trains, including cancellations, diversions, partial cancellations and regulated services.
Railway officials confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries in the incident. The Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) and other senior officials immediately reached the accident site to supervise restoration work and ensure that train operations could be resumed at the earliest.
The derailment occurred on the busy Ghaziabad–New Delhi corridor, which carries a high volume of passenger and freight traffic every day. The incident disrupted both suburban and long-distance train operations, forcing the Railways to implement extensive traffic management measures.
53 Trains Affected
According to railway officials, a total of 53 trains have been impacted due to the derailment.
- 24 trains have been diverted via the Delhi–New Delhi route.
- 16 passenger trains have been cancelled.
- Five passenger trains have been partially cancelled.
- Eight trains, mainly Anand Vihar-bound services operating over the Moradabad Division and North Central Railway (NCR), have been regulated to manage congestion on the affected section.
Officials said these measures were taken to minimize disruption while restoration work continues.
Local Passenger Services Hit the Hardest
The derailment particularly affected daily commuters travelling between Delhi, Ghaziabad, Sahibabad and nearby stations, with several EMU and MEMU passenger services being cancelled.
The following passenger trains were cancelled:
- Train No. 64437 Ghaziabad–Delhi
- Train No. 64402 Delhi–Shahibabad
- Train No. 64411 Shahibabad–Delhi
- Train No. 64408 Delhi–Ghaziabad
- Train No. 64423 Ghaziabad–New Delhi
- Train No. 64430 New Delhi–Ghaziabad
- Train No. 64425 Ghaziabad–New Delhi
- Train No. 64432 New Delhi–Ghaziabad
- Train No. 64417 Ghaziabad–Delhi
- Train No. 64439 Ghaziabad–Delhi
- Train No. 64406 Delhi–Ghaziabad
- Train No. 64401 Ghaziabad–Delhi
- Train No. 64434 Delhi–Ghaziabad
- Train No. 64031 Ghaziabad–Sahibabad
These cancellations significantly affected suburban rail commuters during the day.
Several Trains Short-Terminated and Short-Originated
In addition to complete cancellations, a number of trains were partially cancelled by either originating or terminating at Ghaziabad instead of completing their scheduled journeys.
The affected services include:
- 64104 New Delhi–DKDE: Short-originated from Ghaziabad
- 64109 DKDE–SSB: Short-terminated at Ghaziabad
- 64112 SSB–DKDE: Short-originated from Ghaziabad
- 64152 Delhi–Aligarh Junction: Short-originated from Ghaziabad
- 64053 Palwal–Ghaziabad: Short-terminated at New Delhi
These operational adjustments were made to prevent congestion in the derailment-affected section while maintaining partial connectivity for passengers.
Train Diverted
Railways also diverted one passenger train to avoid the blocked section.
- Train No. 54474 Saharanpur–Delhi was diverted via Sahibabad – Delhi Sarai Rohilla – Delhi, enabling it to reach its destination while bypassing the affected stretch.
Besides this, 24 long-distance trains were diverted through the Delhi–New Delhi route, although the Railways has not yet released the complete list of these services.
Restoration Work Underway
Immediately after the derailment, accident relief teams and engineering staff were mobilised to the site. Senior officials, including the DRM and ADRM of Delhi Division, have been continuously monitoring restoration operations.
Railway personnel are engaged in removing the derailed wagons, repairing the damaged track and restoring signalling and overhead equipment wherever required. Authorities are making efforts to reopen the section safely and restore normal traffic at the earliest.
Officials reiterated that no injuries or casualties were reported in the derailment, and the incident was limited to infrastructure and operational disruption.
Advisory for Passengers
Passengers travelling through the Delhi–Ghaziabad corridor have been advised to check the latest status of their trains before leaving for the station, as restoration work may continue to impact services for some time.
Railway authorities are providing regular updates through station announcements, enquiry counters and official railway information systems. Passengers whose trains have been cancelled, diverted or partially cancelled are advised to verify revised schedules and alternative travel arrangements before commencing their journey.
The cause of the derailment is expected to be investigated after restoration of the affected section. Meanwhile, Indian Railways continues efforts to normalise operations on one of the country’s busiest rail corridors as quickly and safely as possible.
