IIT-Madras joins hands with French University to launch an aviation safety management course

New Delhi, 30 October 2024: Indian Institute of Techbology-Madras’s Technology Innovation Hub, IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, is partnering with French university, L’Ecole Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ENAC), to offer a course on ‘aviation safety management’. The first-of-its-kind course in the Indian civil aviation industry is supported by Airbus.

The course aims at professionals working in the air transport industry and is designed to train safety managers and experts to lead, assess, improve and promote safety performance in the air transport sector. Air transport is a complex and rapidly changing macro-system. Safety management remains a major challenge and requires adapted skills, including soft skills communication, leadership and assertiveness.

It will be a two-year course with one week per two months in-person programme during the first year and one week per month in-person programme during the 2nd year. The faculty will travel from France to conduct the courses. It Includes a six-month project or dissertation.

A press release from IIT-Madras said that the first batch of the course will commence in January 2025. It will have a maximum of 30 seats. The last date to register is 15th December 2024.

Noting that ENAC is a 70 plus years old organisation focused on airline safety management and its related process, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “We are delighted to work with it. IIT Madras and ENAC have the same agenda of imparting education and skill.”

Dr. M.J. Shankar Raman, Chief Executive Officer, Pravartak, noted that civil aviation is one of the fastest growing industries in the last two decades. “Digitization has shrunk the world bringing in huge benefits for the travel industry. The Airline industry’s exponential growth comes with its own set of challenges. It is highly regulated and requires standards and consistency of rules/regulations along with robust and clean processes to assure safety to millions of passengers worldwide.”

IITM Pravartak Technologies is a Section 8 Company housing a technology innovation hub on sensors, networking, actuators and control systems. It is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, under its National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems and hosted by IIT Madras.

ENAC, in turn, is owned by Direction Generale de l’Aviation Civile (DGAC) in France. It provides a range of 25 higher education programmes from bachelor, to MSc, advanced master, MBA, and even PhD.
