Twins Born Safely on Avadh Assam Express Thanks to Northern Railway’s Swift Action

In a heartwarming display of quick thinking and compassionate care, a pregnant passenger on the Avadh Assam Express gave birth to healthy twins at Lucknow railway station on Thursday, with Northern Railway’s Lucknow Division ensuring a safe delivery amid the high-speed journey.
The incident unfolded on October 30 aboard Train No. 15910, the Avadh Assam Express, as a family from Lalgarh traveled toward Samastipur in Bihar. Just before the train pulled into Lucknow Charbagh station, Smt. Heera Devi, wife of Shri Chhotu and a resident of Samastipur, suddenly went into labor. Alert family members promptly contacted the Indian Railways helpline at 139 to seek urgent assistance.
Upon receiving the alert, officials from Northern Railway’s Lucknow Division sprang into action. They coordinated essential medical arrangements at the station to be ready upon the train’s arrival. As the express halted, Smt. Heera Devi was carefully assisted off the train by female personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), a team of doctors from the Northern Railway Divisional Hospital, and the station’s Emergency Medical Room.
An ambulance from the 108 emergency service was immediately summoned for transport to a nearby facility. However, in a moment of remarkable efficiency, the on-site medical team delivered the twins—a boy and a girl—safely right there at the station, even before the ambulance arrived. Both the mother and the newborns are reported to be in good health.
Grateful and relieved, Smt. Heera Devi declined further hospital admission, expressing her profound thanks to the railway staff for their prompt and empathetic support. “Their quick response made all the difference,” she said, as her family beamed with joy.
Overwhelmed by the railway’s sensitivity, the family proceeded with their onward journey later that evening aboard the Gwalior-Barauni Express, carrying memories of an unexpected but joyous milestone.
This episode underscores Northern Railway’s unwavering commitment to passenger safety and well-being, exemplifying a humanitarian approach that turns potential crises into stories of triumph. Railway authorities hailed the coordinated effort as a testament to their 24/7 readiness, urging travelers to utilize helpline 139 in emergencies.
As India’s rail network continues to serve millions daily, such acts of kindness remind us of the human touch behind the tracks.
