North India’s First River Rejuvenation Project Devika Nears Completion, Launched by PM Modi Himself: Dr. Jitendra Singh
Dr. Jitendra Singh reviews Liquid Waste Management to protect the sanctity of holy Devika River
The River Rejuvenation Project Devika, North India’s first of its kind, is nearing completion, according to Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space. This significant project, built at a cost of over Rs 190 crore and modeled on the lines of the successful ‘Namami Ganga’, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.
During a comprehensive review of the Liquid Waste Management Project, which plays a crucial role in preserving the sanctity of the holy Devika River in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the religious significance of the river, often referred to as the sister of the sacred Ganga.
The Liquid Waste Management Project involves the construction of an extensive network of pipes and manholes that connect all households under the Devika Rejuvenation Project, ensuring the proper disposal of waste and safeguarding the purity of the river. The Union Minister shared that out of the allocated Rs 190 crore funds, the Central and Union Territory (UT) governments share the allocation in a 90:10 ratio, respectively.
Additionally, Dr. Jitendra Singh informed about the forthcoming Solid Waste Management Project, which will further contribute to maintaining the sanctity of the Devika River, addressing environmental concerns effectively.
During the review meeting, Dr. Jitendra Singh underscored the vital role of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) as representatives of the grassroots level in ensuring the successful implementation of major developmental projects. Several issues were raised by the PRIs present during the meeting, and the Minister promptly directed the concerned departments to address these issues promptly.
The meeting witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including DC Udhampur, Sachin Kumar Vaishya, Additional DRM Northern Railways, Baldev Raj, SSP Udhampur, Dr. Vinod Kumar, DDC, BDC members, Sarpanchs, and Panchs, collectively reaffirming their commitment to the success of the Devika Rejuvenation Project.
