Modi Government Greenlights 27 Manufacturers in PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware

Expanding on the triumph of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for mobile phones, the Union Cabinet, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave the nod to the PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT hardware on May 17, 2023. This forward-looking initiative encompasses the production of laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs, servers, and ultra-small form factor devices.

Today, the government announced the approval of applications from 27 IT hardware manufacturers. Renowned brands such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and others will now have their IT hardware manufactured in India. The anticipated outcomes of this approval throughout the scheme’s duration are outlined as follows:

  • Employment opportunities: A total of approximately 200,000 jobs, including 50,000 direct roles and about 150,000 indirect positions.
  • Value of IT hardware production: Expected to reach 3.5 lakh crore rupees (equivalent to 42 billion US dollars).
  • Investments by companies: Envisioned at 3,000 crore rupees (equivalent to 360 million US dollars).

During an address to industry leaders and the media, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics, and IT, highlighted that “23 out of the 27 approved applicants are poised to commence manufacturing from day one.” This strategic move aims to bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities and promote self-reliance in the IT hardware sector, aligning with the government’s broader vision of a resilient and self-sufficient economy.
