Lowest minimum Temperature of 1.1°C over Delhi on 1 Jan 2021 after 2006

Observed minimum Temperature today: Delhi (Safdarjung Airport) recorded lowest winter minimum temperature of 1.1°C on 01st January, 2021. This is the lowest minimum temperature for the month of January after 2006.

The lowest ever minimum temperature over Delhi has been recorded as 0.2°C on 8th January, 2006. (refer Table 1 for year-wise January month’s daily lowest minimum temperature as observed for the period of 1991 till 2021)

Cold Wave spell over Delhi: Cold wave to severe cold wave condition is prevailing over Delhi since 28th December, 2020. It was intensified since 29th December with Safdarjung recording 3.6°C, 3.5°C and 3.3°C respectively on 29th, 30th and 31st December, 2020. During 31st December-1 st January night, clear skies with local radiation cooling led to fall of minimum temperature by 1 to 2°C and hence leading to the lowest temperature of the season as 1.1°C. 3.

Forecast for Delhi

(i) Rain/Thunderstorm Forecast: A fresh active Western Disturbance likely to affect Western Himalayan Region & adjoining plains from 03rd January, 2021 onwards. Due to interaction between the above Western Disturbance and lower level easterlies from Bay of Bengal, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm/hailstorm at isolated places likely over Delhi during 3rd -05th with maximum intensity on 04th & 05th January, 2021.

(ii) Temperature Forecast– Easterly wind has set in over Delhi causing rise in temperature by 1130 IST by 2-4°C compared to yesterday. It is likely to Rise by 5-7°C in minimum temperatures during next 3 days. Hence, Cold Wave Condition over Delhi would abate from tomorrow, the 2nd January, 2021.
