Active caseload falls below 5 lakh, total recoveries cross 80 lakh

For the first time in 106 days, the number of active cases in India fell below the five-lakh mark indicating a sustained trend of declining active cases in the country.

According to the health ministry, It assumes higher significance in the context of several countries across the globe reporting a surge in the number of new cases.

Currently, India has 4,94,657 active cases, which is 5.73 per cent of the total infections reported in the country so far.

This landmark achievement has been made possible by the Centre’s sustained, graded and targeted strategies, their effective implementation by the states and UTs, and also the dedicated and selfless service of doctors and all other COVID-19 warriors, the ministry said.

Twenty-seven states have less than 20,000 active cases. Just eight states have more than 20,000 cases; while Maharashtra and Kerala have over 50,000 active cases.

In the 24-hour period ending Wednesday 8 am, India registered 44,281 new cases while 50,326 people recuperated during the same period. This was the 39th day that daily recoveries exceeded new cases.

Total recoveries have crossed the 80-lakh mark. The gap between recovered and active cases has widened to 75,19,126 and the Recovery Rate has increased to 92.79 per cent.

Also, 12 crore tests for detection of COVID-19 infections have been conducted so far. 11,53,294 tests have been conducted in the last 24 hours in the country.

“The trend of daily low cases has been made possible by an exponential increase in the testing infrastructure.

“High testing has aided in early identification of the infected population, thus preventing the transmission of the virus to the non-infected,” the ministry said.

Of the new recovered cases, 77 per cent are observed to be concentrated in 10 states and UTs. Maharashtra has reported the maximum single day recoveries of 6,718, closely followed by the 6,698 figure achieved by Kerala.

Among the top 10 states and UTs that have reported 78 per cent of the new cases are Delhi with 7,830, followed by Kerala at 6,010 cases.
