Madhya Pradesh Sizzles as Mercury Hits Record Highs: Heatwave Sweeps Across the State
Madhya Pradesh, known for its diverse landscapes and cultural heritage, found itself in the throes of an intense heatwave as temperatures soared to unprecedented levels on May 28, 2024. The India Meteorological Department’s Meteorological Centre in Bhopal recorded staggering temperatures across various districts, painting a grim picture of the scorching conditions gripping the region.
In Prithvipur_Arg (Niwari), the mercury peaked at a blistering 48.5°C, marking a startling 24-hour surge of 2.5°C in maximum temperature. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature settled at 32.2°C, showing a departure of -1°C.
Datia, another district reeling under the heatwave, recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 48.4°C, with no change observed in the last 24 hours. The minimum temperature rose to 28.9°C, depicting a notable increase of 0.8°C.
Rewa faced a similar heat onslaught with temperatures reaching 48.2°C, soaring by 4°C within 24 hours. The minimum temperature in Rewa rose to 28.6°C, indicating a departure of 1.9°C.
Khajuraho, known for its architectural splendor, experienced oppressive heat as the mercury climbed to 48.0°C, accompanied by a 24-hour change of 0.8°C in maximum temperature. The minimum temperature recorded in Khajuraho was 31.2°C, marking a departure of 3.4°C.
Gwalior, a historic city in Madhya Pradesh, faced sweltering conditions with a high of 47.6°C, witnessing a 24-hour increase of 0.9°C in maximum temperature. The minimum temperature settled at 29.2°C, showing a departure of 1.4°C.
Tikamgarh, Satna, and Nowgong were among the districts grappling with soaring temperatures, recording maximum temperatures of 47.2°C, 47.1°C, and 47.1°C, respectively. These districts also experienced significant changes in maximum and minimum temperatures, indicating the severity of the heatwave.
As the scorching heat persisted, districts like Damoh, Guna, and Umaria witnessed temperatures hovering around 46-47°C, with noticeable fluctuations in both maximum and minimum temperatures.
While some districts like Sagar and Indore saw a slight relief with temperatures dropping marginally, others continued to face the brunt of the heatwave, with the mercury refusing to relent.
The alarming rise in temperatures has prompted authorities to issue heatwave warnings, urging citizens to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
