Vande Bharat Sleeper Makes Grand Debut as Tickets Sell Out Within Hours

The first-ever commercial run of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the Kamakhya–Howrah route has witnessed an extraordinary response from passengers, with tickets selling out within hours of the opening of reservations. The overwhelming demand highlights the growing public enthusiasm for modern, fast, and comfortable rail travel in India.

Train No. 27576, the Vande Bharat Sleeper service connecting Kamakhya (KYQ) in Assam with Howrah (HWH) in West Bengal, is scheduled to begin its maiden commercial journey on 22 January 2026 from Kamakhya and on 23 January 2026 from Howrah. Ticket bookings for this much-anticipated service opened on 19 January 2026 at 8:00 am through the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) and other authorized online platforms. Remarkably, all available seats across classes were fully booked in less than 24 hours, underscoring the massive public interest in the new premium sleeper service.

The swift sell-out comes just days after the Vande Bharat Sleeper was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 17 January 2026. Designed to offer a world-class overnight travel experience, the train represents a significant upgrade in long-distance rail travel, combining semi-high-speed performance with enhanced comfort and state-of-the-art amenities. The enthusiastic response to its very first commercial run vividly reflects passengers’ eagerness to experience the next generation of Indian Railways’ services.

Railway officials described the booking response as “phenomenal,” noting that such rapid ticket sales are a strong indicator of changing passenger preferences. Travelers are increasingly opting for faster, safer, and more comfortable options, even for overnight journeys. The Vande Bharat Sleeper, with its modern interiors, improved safety features, and time-saving capabilities, appears to have struck the right chord with passengers across different age groups and travel purposes.

The Kamakhya–Howrah corridor is a vital link between the Northeast and Eastern India, catering to a large volume of passengers, including business travelers, students, tourists, and families. The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper on this route is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between the two regions. By reducing travel time and improving onboard comfort, the service aims to make long-distance overnight rail travel more efficient and pleasant.

According to officials of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the fully booked status of the inaugural commercial run stands as a strong testament to the trust passengers have placed in the modern train services being introduced in the region. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is seen not just as a new train, but as a symbol of transformation in Indian Railways, particularly for the Northeast, which has been witnessing rapid infrastructure development in recent years.

The train is equipped with a range of contemporary features, including ergonomically designed berths, advanced climate control, improved lighting, enhanced security systems, and modern washrooms. These amenities are aimed at providing passengers with a comfortable and restful journey, comparable to global standards of overnight rail travel. Such features have played a key role in generating excitement and driving the strong booking response.

The success of the Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper’s first commercial booking is being viewed as a milestone moment. It marks a new chapter in premium rail connectivity for the Northeast Frontier Railway zone and reinforces Indian Railways’ broader vision of modernizing passenger services across the country.

With tickets sold out within hours, expectations are high that the Vande Bharat Sleeper will set new benchmarks for demand and performance. Railway authorities are optimistic that this response will encourage the introduction of more such premium sleeper services on other long-distance routes, further reshaping the future of rail travel in India.
