Vande Bharat Express Jammu Extension Cancelled Till Further Notice
Hours After Announcement, Northern Railway Suspends March 1 Launch Due to Unavoidable Circumstances

In a surprising turn of events, Indian Railways has suspended the planned extension of the Vande Bharat Express service from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, originally set to commence on March 1, 2026. The decision, issued by the Railway Board late on February 24, came just hours after Northern Railway announced the extension, leaving passengers, tourism operators, and regional stakeholders disappointed.
Northern Railway had earlier released an official statement on February 24, confirming that the existing Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express (Train Nos. 26401/26402) would be extended to Jammu Tawi. This upgrade promised to slash travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to approximately 4 hours 55 minutes (from over 5 hours), with departures from Jammu at 6:15 AM arriving in Srinagar by 11:15 AM, and return services departing Srinagar at 2:00 PM reaching Jammu by 6:50 PM. The train was to halt at key stations including Katra, Reasi, and Banihal.
A major highlight was the proposed shift from an 8-coach rake (capacity ~530 passengers) to a 20-coach configuration, boosting seating to over 1,440 and enhancing comfort for pilgrims, tourists, and locals. The move aligned with the recent completion of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which provides all-weather rail access to the Kashmir Valley—offering a reliable alternative to the often-disrupted Jammu–Srinagar National Highway prone to landslides and snow.
However, by 10:36 PM on February 24, Northern Railway issued an updated notification: “Due to some unavoidable circumstances, the notification programme of Vande Bharat’s extension from March 1 has been put on hold by the Railway Board till further advice.” Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal confirmed the hold, expressing regret for the inconvenience and stating that further details would be shared when available.
Reports indicate the Railway Board overruled the zone-level announcement, citing pending operational clearances. Key issues reportedly include finalizing logistics for the longer rake, coach upgrades, timetable adjustments, and other administrative approvals that could not be secured in time. The region has faced persistent operational challenges, including weather-related disruptions, ongoing capacity enhancements, and extensions of train cancellations/short-terminations in the Jammu division until mid-2026.
The initial announcement had generated excitement, with expectations of boosted tourism, trade, business, and socio-economic ties between Jammu and Kashmir. Passenger groups and tourism stakeholders had hailed it as a game-changer for year-round connectivity, especially during adverse weather when road travel becomes unreliable.
As the extension remains deferred “till further notice,” commuters await a clear timeline and detailed rationale from Indian Railways. The current Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat service continues to operate, serving pilgrims to the Vaishno Devi shrine and tourists exploring the Valley. Authorities have assured that updates will follow once procedural requirements are met, keeping hopes alive for eventual seamless semi-high-speed rail linkage across the Union Territory.
