Unprecedented Rainfall in Rajasthan: May 2023 Breaks 100-Year Record
Jaipur, Rajasthan – The month of May 2023 brought unprecedented rainfall to the state of Rajasthan, shattering previous records. According to the latest rainfall report, the actual rainfall recorded in May was 62.4 mm, while the normal rainfall for the same period is 13.6 mm. This remarkable figure marks the highest rainfall observed in the state in the past 100 years. The previous record of 71.9 mm was set in May 1917.
The India Meteorological Department reported that the cumulative rainfall for the entire state in May 2023 was 458% of its long period average (LPA) based on data from 1971 to 2020. This signifies a large excess of rainfall, surpassing the normal average by 358%. Furthermore, East Rajasthan received 428% of its LPA, while West Rajasthan experienced 481% of its LPA.
Out of the 33 districts in Rajasthan, all of them received large excess rainfall, with a departure of 60% or more from the normal average. This widespread precipitation has brought relief to the state, benefiting agriculture and alleviating water scarcity concerns.
Bikaner, a city in Rajasthan, witnessed a remarkable event on May 29th. At 8:30 AM Indian Standard Time, a staggering 72.8 mm of rainfall was recorded in just a single day, breaking the previous record set in 1999 when 63.1 mm was observed in a day.
The torrential rains have been attributed to various weather systems and factors that influenced the monsoon patterns in the region. The India Meteorological Department and local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing necessary updates and advisories to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.
The rainfall report was compiled by the Rainfall Monitoring Unit of the India Meteorological Department’s office in Jaipur. Dinesh Ratangwal and Radheshyam Sharma, the responsible officials, emphasized the significance of this extraordinary rainfall event and the need for continued vigilance in monitoring weather conditions.
The excessive rainfall has brought both opportunities and challenges for the state of Rajasthan.
