Tragic Freight Train Derailment Near Patel Nagar Railway Station: Investigation Underway

In a tragic incident near the Patel Nagar railway station in Delhi, a freight train laden with steel coil rolls overturned from the tracks. Delhi’s DRM Sukhvinder Singh confirmed that a total of 11 wagons derailed, with nine of them completely overturned, resulting in one fatality.

According to reports, the incident occurred beneath the Zakhira Flyover when the freight train, traveling from Mumbai to Chandigarh, suddenly derailed from the track while maintaining a speed of 30 kilometers per hour on Saturday morning.

The freight train comprised 57 wagons, out of which only the 11 wagons that derailed were affected. The rest have been removed from the site.

Each wagon of the freight train was loaded with heavy steel coil rolls. The latches securing the 54-ton steel coils seemed to have come loose, causing imbalance in one of the wagons, leading it to tilt and eventually derail from the track. This imbalance affected other wagons as well, resulting in the overturning of nine wagons and two falling off the tracks.

Railway authorities have formed an investigation committee to determine the exact cause of the derailment. Factors such as the condition of the track, braking mechanisms, and other technical aspects will be thoroughly examined.

While there hasn’t been confirmation of any casualties from railway authorities yet, it’s believed that one person lost their life in the incident.

The area where the derailment occurred is facing significant encroachment issues on the railway land, causing hindrances in the track restoration process.
