Severe Cyclonic Storm “Michaung” Advances Northward Along Andhra Pradesh Coast

In the latest meteorological update, the severe cyclonic storm “Michaung” (pronounced as Migjaum) has displayed a northward trajectory along the west-central Bay of Bengal, impacting the coastal regions of South Andhra Pradesh. As of 0830 HRS IST on December 5, 2023, the storm is centered over the same region near Latitude 15.2°N and Longitude 80.25°E, approximately 40 km northeast of Kavali, 80 km north-northeast of Nellore, 80 km south-southwest of Bapatla, and 140 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam.

Current Intensity and Movement:

  • The storm exhibits a current intensity near the center of 90-100 KMPH, gusting to 110 KMPH.
  • Over the past six hours, “Michaung” has moved northwards at a speed of 12 KMPH.

Forecast and Projected Movement:

  • The forecast indicates that the system, closely moving northwards along the coast, continues to have parts of the wall cloud region over land.
  • Anticipated to maintain its northward trajectory, the cyclonic storm is projected to cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast close to Bapatla within the next four hours. The expected sustained wind speed during this landfall is 90-100 KMPH, gusting to 110 KMPH.
