Severe Cyclonic Storm “Biparjoy” Threatens Arabian Sea Coastline
Mumbai, June 8, 2023: The Arabian Sea is currently under the grip of a very severe cyclonic storm named “Biparjoy” (pronounced as “Biporjoy”). This powerful storm, located over the east-central Arabian Sea, has been moving steadily in a northward direction with a speed of 5 kmph over the past six hours, posing a significant threat to coastal areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of wind warnings and advisories for the affected regions. As of today, gale wind speeds ranging from 135-145 kmph, gusting up to 160 kmph, are prevailing over the east-central Arabian Sea and adjoining areas of the west-central Arabian Sea. These wind speeds are expected to increase further, reaching 145-155 kmph, gusting to 170 kmph, by the night of June 8th. Additionally, the IMD has warned of gale wind speeds of 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph, in the adjoining areas of the south Arabian Sea.
The coastal areas of Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra are likely to experience squally weather conditions, with wind speeds ranging from 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph. Meanwhile, the central Arabian Sea is expected to witness gale wind speeds of 145-155 kmph, gusting to 170 kmph on June 9th and 10th. Adjoining areas of the south Arabian Sea may experience squally wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph during the same period.
On June 11th and 12th, the storm is forecasted to impact the central and adjoining north Arabian Sea, with gale wind speeds reaching 135-145 kmph, gusting to 160 kmph. The coastal areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat are expected to experience squally weather conditions during this period, with wind speeds ranging from 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph.
Sea conditions are predicted to deteriorate significantly as the storm progresses. The east-central and adjoining west-central Arabian Sea are likely to experience phenomenal sea conditions, while the south Arabian Sea will witness very rough to high sea conditions. Along the coasts of Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, rough sea conditions are anticipated.
Fishermen have been issued warnings to suspend all fishing operations until June 12th in the east-central, west-central, and south Arabian Sea. Additionally, fishing activities are not advised in the central and adjoining north Arabian Sea from June 12th to 14th. Fishermen are urged not to venture into the central Arabian Sea until June 13th and to avoid the adjoining areas of the north Arabian Sea from June 12th to 14th. Those currently at sea are advised to return to the coast for their safety.
