Railways Sanction Fourth Line Between Baikunth and Urkura at ₹426 Crore to Boost Capacity on Mumbai–Howrah Route

In a major infrastructure push aimed at easing congestion on one of the country’s busiest rail corridors, the Ministry of Railways has sanctioned the construction of a fourth railway line between Baikunth and Urkura in Chhattisgarh at an estimated cost of ₹426.01 crore. The new line, spanning 26.40 kilometres, will be executed under the South East Central Railway and is expected to significantly enhance both passenger and freight operations in the region.

The Baikunth–Urkura section forms a crucial part of the Bilaspur–Raipur–Nagpur main line, which also lies on the Mumbai–Howrah high-density railway network. This corridor is among the most heavily utilised in the country, carrying a large volume of long-distance passenger trains as well as bulk freight traffic. At present, the section is operating at near-saturated capacity, leading to congestion, delays, and operational constraints, highlighting the urgent need for capacity augmentation.

Railway officials said the sanctioned fourth line will play a key role in decongesting the section and improving the overall efficiency of train operations. With the addition of the new line, the Railways will be able to run more passenger and coaching services, reduce detention of trains, and improve punctuality on this critical route. The project is expected to make journeys smoother and more reliable for thousands of passengers who travel daily on this stretch.

Beyond passenger convenience, the project is also aimed at strengthening freight movement, which is vital for the economic activity of the region. According to official estimates, the additional line will facilitate incremental freight traffic of about 14.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This enhanced capacity is projected to generate additional earnings of approximately ₹61.70 crore per year for Indian Railways, starting from the very first year of the line’s commissioning.

The Baikunth–Urkura region and its surrounding areas have seen rapid industrial growth in recent years, particularly in sectors such as power generation, coal mining, steel production and cement manufacturing. Several new industrial and allied projects are also in various stages of development. The existing railway infrastructure has been under increasing pressure to handle the growing volume of raw materials and finished goods, making this capacity expansion both timely and critical.

Officials said the new fourth line will ensure faster, more reliable and more predictable transportation of bulk commodities such as coal, iron ore, limestone, cement and finished steel products. This, in turn, will help improve supply chain efficiency, reduce logistics costs for industries, and support further industrial growth in the region.

The project has been identified under the Energy, Cement and Mineral Corridor, a focused initiative of Indian Railways aimed at strengthening rail infrastructure in high-traffic and economically strategic areas of the country. Under this approach, priority is being given to sections that serve core industries and contribute significantly to freight loading and national economic output.

The Mumbai–Howrah route, on which this section lies, is a lifeline of the Indian railway network, connecting major industrial and commercial hubs across central and eastern India. Any improvement in capacity and operational efficiency on this corridor is expected to have a cascading positive impact on the movement of goods and passengers across multiple states.

Railway planners noted that capacity augmentation projects such as this are essential to meet the growing demand for rail transport, both for passengers and freight, while also improving the quality of service. With additional tracks, train scheduling becomes more flexible, overtaking becomes easier, and the overall resilience of the network improves in case of disruptions.

Once completed, the fourth line between Baikunth and Urkura is expected to transform rail operations on this busy stretch. For passengers, it promises faster, smoother and more punctual journeys. For industries, it offers more reliable and higher-capacity logistics support. And for Indian Railways, it represents another step towards building a more efficient, robust and future-ready railway network that can support the country’s economic ambitions.
