Railways Earns Rs 14,642 Crores from Freight Loading in May 2023
New Delhi, June 8, 2023 – The Indian Railways has reported a remarkable boost in its freight earnings for the month of May 2023. According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Railways, the revenue from freight loading reached an impressive amount of Rs. 14,641.83 crore, showing a notable 4% increase compared to the same period last year, when the earnings stood at Rs. 14,083.86 crore.
In terms of freight loading, the Indian Railways achieved a significant milestone by handling 134 million tonnes (MT) in May 2023. This marks a commendable 2% improvement compared to the freight loading of 131.50 MT in May 2022.
The cumulative data from April to May 2023 also revealed a positive trend. The railways successfully loaded 260.28 MT during this period, demonstrating a 3% growth compared to the loading of 253.48 MT in the corresponding period of the previous year. The earnings from freight loading during this cumulative period amounted to Rs. 28,512.46 crore, showcasing an impressive 5% rise compared to Rs. 27,066.42 crore in the same timeframe last year.
Among the various categories of goods, coal emerged as the dominant freight with a loading of 65.89 MT in May 2023. This was followed by iron ore with 15.23 MT, cement with 13.20 MT, and balance other goods with 10.96 MT. Additionally, containers witnessed a loading of 6.79 MT, while fertilizers accounted for 4.89 MT. The loading of food grains and mineral oil stood at 4.85 MT and 4.23 MT, respectively, during the same month.
The Indian Railways has attributed this remarkable growth in freight loading and earnings to its customer-centric approach, business development initiatives, and streamlined policies.
