Railway Board Orders Fast-Track Implementation of Dankuni–Surat Dedicated Freight Corridor

In a major push to strengthen India’s freight infrastructure, the Railway Board has directed the expeditious implementation of the newly announced Dankuni–Surat Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), unveiled in the Union Budget 2026. The move signals the Centre’s commitment to enhancing freight capacity, improving logistics efficiency, and supporting industrial growth across key states.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has instructed officials to ensure time-bound execution of the strategically significant corridor. The proposed DFC, approximately 2,100 kilometres in length, will connect Dankuni in West Bengal to Surat in Gujarat, traversing through Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. The corridor is expected to serve as a critical freight artery linking eastern and western India.

Once operational, the Dankuni–Surat DFC will significantly enhance freight movement across the country by reducing transit time for goods trains and decongesting existing railway routes. With freight traffic currently sharing tracks with passenger services on many sections, congestion has been a persistent challenge. The new corridor is designed to provide a dedicated, high-capacity route exclusively for freight trains, thereby improving punctuality and operational efficiency across the broader railway network.

Officials of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) have been instructed to immediately formalize optimal technical standards, incorporating the latest advancements in freight logistics. Among the key features under consideration are high-capacity electrification systems to support heavier and longer freight trains, elimination of level crossings (nil LCs) to enhance safety and operational speed, and deployment of advanced signalling systems such as ‘Kavach’ for improved train protection and collision avoidance.

The Railway Board has also directed an update of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the corridor. The revised DPR will include updated cost estimates, refined timelines, and improved planning strategies to ensure efficient budgeting and timely completion. Authorities aim to integrate lessons learned from the successful execution of the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors, which have already transformed freight operations in several regions.

To accelerate implementation, the corridor will be divided into suitable project sections, enabling simultaneous execution across multiple stretches. Dedicated core teams will be constituted for each segment and stationed on the ground to closely monitor progress, resolve bottlenecks, and coordinate with state authorities. This decentralised yet closely supervised approach is expected to reduce delays and ensure accountability at every stage.

The Railway Board has further instructed that all pre-construction activities—including land acquisition assessments, utility shifting, environmental clearances, and detailed surveys—be comprehensively identified and fast-tracked. Preparation of contract documents will begin in parallel to avoid procedural delays once approvals are in place. Officials have been asked to adopt a proactive approach to ensure that project rollout proceeds seamlessly.

An assessment of optimum manpower requirements for the corridor is also underway to ensure adequate staffing during both construction and operational phases. The Board has mandated weekly progress reviews, during which updates on action taken, milestones achieved, and challenges faced will be presented. Necessary policy or administrative support will be extended promptly to maintain momentum.

The Dankuni–Surat DFC is expected to boost industrial corridors, ports, and manufacturing clusters along its route, strengthening supply chains and reducing logistics costs. By enabling faster and more reliable freight movement, the project aligns with the government’s broader vision of enhancing ease of doing business and promoting multimodal connectivity under national infrastructure development initiatives.

With clear directives from the Railway Minister and close monitoring by the Railway Board, the Dankuni–Surat Dedicated Freight Corridor is poised to become a transformative addition to India’s freight network, reinforcing the country’s position as a rapidly growing logistics and manufacturing hub.
