Northern Railway Breaks Records in Passenger, Parcel, and Coaching Earnings in May 2023
Northern Railway, despite facing numerous challenges, has achieved significant milestones in freight loading and passenger, parcel, and coaching earnings in May 2023 for the fiscal year 2023-24. Shobhan Chaudhuri, the General Manager of Northern Railway, shared the remarkable achievements of the railway during this period.
One of the key highlights is the originating freight loading of 9.68 million tonnes. The railway witnessed growth in various sectors, including fertilizer (5.24%), cement (15.48%), and POL (10.27%). In May 2023, a record-breaking 2099 wagons, equivalent to 0.14 million tonnes, were loaded, resulting in earnings of Rs. 14.35 crore. This accomplishment was primarily attributed to the dedicated efforts of the Business Development Units of the railway. Additionally, the unloading performance improved by 0.95%, with 11.69 million tonnes being unloaded compared to 11.58 million tonnes in May 2022. Northern Railway also experienced a remarkable 17.55% increase in the operation of long-haul trains, with 710 trains running compared to 604 in May 2022.
In terms of passenger earnings, Northern Railway witnessed a substantial 11.71% growth, earning Rs. 987.38 crore in May 2023 compared to Rs. 883.87 crore in May 2022. Furthermore, the railway earned Rs. 104.29 crore in other coaching earnings, Rs. 566.50 crore in goods earnings, and Rs. 41.37 crore in sundry earnings.
The ticket checking drive conducted by Northern Railway during May 2023 also yielded positive results, surpassing the Rs. 26 crore mark, which is 21% higher than the corresponding period. This emphasizes the railway’s commitment to ensuring ticket compliance and revenue generation.
Northern Railway’s passenger marketing initiatives in May 2023 included the origination of 87 additional reserved summer special trains, generating an additional revenue of Rs. 9.23 crore. Additionally, 31 unreserved round trips of summer special trains on the Kalka-Shimla route were operated, further enhancing passenger convenience and revenue. The augmentation of 165 additional coaches in Northern Railway trains during the month also contributed to additional revenue of approximately Rs. 1.24 crore.
