NHAI Launches AI-Powered Dashcam Analytics to Revolutionize Monitoring of 40,000 km National Highways

In a major push towards smarter, safer, and more efficient highway management, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the deployment of AI-powered Dashcam Analytics Services (DAS) across approximately 40,000 km of the national highway network. This cutting-edge initiative harnesses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to enable real-time, data-driven monitoring, predictive maintenance, and rapid defect detection, marking a significant step in modernizing India’s vast road infrastructure.

The system introduces specialized dashboard cameras mounted on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs), which will conduct comprehensive weekly surveys of highway stretches. These advanced dashcams capture high-resolution images and videos, feeding vast amounts of visual data into sophisticated AI/ML models. Trained to identify over 30 types of defects, the technology automatically detects issues such as potholes, cracks, pavement deterioration, faded or damaged lane markings, malfunctioning crash barriers, non-functional streetlights, and other road furniture anomalies.

Beyond physical road conditions, the DAS will flag critical safety risks, including illegal encroachments, unauthorized signboards, improper parking, and other violations that could endanger commuters. To ensure round-the-clock safety compliance, the initiative incorporates periodic nighttime surveys focused on assessing the visibility and functionality of signages, road markings, and lighting systems—key factors in reducing accidents during low-visibility conditions.

This tech-forward approach allows for remote tracking and assessment, minimizing reliance on manual inspections while enabling faster response times. Detected issues will trigger prompt alerts and work orders for maintenance teams, facilitating predictive rather than reactive repairs. By integrating with NHAI’s broader digital ecosystem—including its AI-enabled Data Lake platform—the collected data will support actionable insights, long-term planning, and enhanced transparency in highway operations.

The rollout of DAS aligns with NHAI’s ongoing efforts to leverage technology for superior road asset management. Earlier initiatives, such as the deployment of Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) equipped with 3D lasers and 360-degree cameras across over 20,000 km in multiple states, have already demonstrated the power of AI in pavement condition analysis and defect reporting. The new DAS complements these by providing more frequent, patrol-based monitoring specifically tailored to operational oversight.

Officials emphasize that this initiative will significantly improve road safety, reduce accident risks from undetected hazards, and optimize maintenance budgets through early intervention. With India’s national highways handling millions of vehicles daily and serving as the backbone of economic connectivity, timely upkeep is crucial to minimizing disruptions, lowering vehicle wear, and supporting smoother freight and passenger movement.

The project reflects the government’s commitment to “data-driven governance” in infrastructure. By engaging specialized DAS providers, NHAI aims to scale this high-tech surveillance efficiently across a vast network spanning diverse terrains and traffic volumes.

Stakeholders, including commuters, logistics operators, and state transport authorities, are expected to benefit from fewer pothole-related incidents, better-lit highways at night, and clearer signage—ultimately contributing to a more reliable and world-class highway experience. As implementation progresses, NHAI plans to expand coverage and refine AI models based on real-world performance, setting a benchmark for intelligent infrastructure management in developing economies.
