In a strategic move aimed at bolstering operational readiness, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has recently deployed a new Helicopter Unit at Air Force Station Thanjavur. The Southern Air Command (SAC) oversaw the induction ceremony, led by Air Marshal B Manikantan AVSM VM, AOC-in-C SAC.
The Southern Air Command, established in July 1984, has continuously evolved to meet emerging geopolitical challenges, particularly in the Indian Ocean Region. The addition of the Helicopter Unit at Thanjavur further enhances SAC’s capability for rapid deployment and effective command and control of IAF assets.
The induction of this helicopter unit not only strengthens the operational capabilities of the Air Force but also reinforces its commitment to peacetime duties such as Search and Rescue operations, Humanitarian Assistance, Disaster Relief, and Casualty evacuation.
