Law Commission of India Seeks Public and Religious Organizations’ Inputs on Uniform Civil Code

The Law Commission of India has launched a public consultation to gather opinions and suggestions from both the general public and recognized religious organizations regarding the Uniform Civil Code. This move comes in response to a reference sent by the Ministry of Law & Justice, which has tasked the 22nd Law Commission with examining the matter.

Previously, the 21st Law Commission had undertaken a comprehensive study on the Uniform Civil Code and had sought input from various stakeholders. The Commission had issued appeals and questionnaires on October 7, 2016, along with subsequent public notices on March 19, 2018, March 27, 2018, and April 10, 2018. These initiatives generated an overwhelming response from individuals and organizations across the country. As a result, the 21st Law Commission published a consultation paper titled “Reforms of Family Law” on August 31, 2018.

However, recognizing the passage of more than three years since the issuance of the consultation paper and considering the significance of the subject matter, as well as recent court orders related to it, the 22nd Law Commission has decided to revisit the issue and seek fresh deliberations.

Consequently, the 22nd Law Commission of India has once again invited the public at large and recognized religious organizations to share their views and ideas on the Uniform Civil Code. Interested individuals and organizations are requested to submit their opinions within a period of 30 days from the date of this notice.

This move by the Law Commission of India reflects its commitment to engaging with various stakeholders and gathering diverse perspectives on the crucial matter of the Uniform Civil Code. The Commission looks forward to a robust and comprehensive exchange of ideas as it proceeds with its examination of this important legal issue.
