Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya Takes Oath as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court
In a momentous ceremony held at Raj Bhavan Mumbai on Saturday (29 July), Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the esteemed Bombay High Court. The event was graced by the presence of distinguished dignitaries, including Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais, who administered the oath of office to Justice Upadhyaya.
Accompanied by the Governor’s spouse, Rambai Bais, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Speaker Rahul Narwekar, Minister of Skill Development Mangal Prabhat Lodha, judges from the Bombay and Allahabad High Courts, Chairman of Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission Justice (retd) K K Tated, State Election Commissioner U P S Madan, and other senior government officials, the ceremony was a display of grandeur and reverence.
Chief Secretary Manoj Saunik read out the Warrant of Appointment of the Chief Justice, issued by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, officially cementing Justice Upadhyaya’s position as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The event commenced with the rendition of the National Anthem and State Anthem, followed by the police band playing the National Anthem to mark the conclusion of the ceremony.
Born on 16th June 1965, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya pursued his legal education at Lucknow University and successfully graduated in Law in 1991. He commenced his legal career as an advocate on 11th May 1991, specializing in civil and constitutional law at the Allahabad High Court, Lucknow Bench. Due to his exemplary legal acumen, he was promoted as an Additional Judge on 21st November 2011 and subsequently appointed as a Permanent Judge on 6th August 2013.
Justice Upadhyaya’s appointment as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court marks a significant milestone in his judicial journey, and his wealth of experience and legal expertise are expected to contribute greatly to upholding justice and the rule of law in the region.
