India’s Southwest Monsoon Withdraws, Weather Patterns Shift

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the Southwest Monsoon has officially withdrawn from the entire country on October 19th, 2023. This marks a significant transition in the country’s weather patterns.

Low-Pressure Areas and Weather Developments

  1. A Low-Pressure Area currently resides over the Southeast and adjoining Southwest Arabian Sea. IMD forecasts suggest it is likely to evolve into a Depression over the Southwest and adjoining Westcentral Arabian Sea by October 21st.
  2. Another Low-Pressure Area is anticipated to form over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 21st. It is expected to intensify further into a Depression over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal around October 23rd.

Dry Spell in the Last 24 Hours

The IMD’s records show that no significant rainfall was recorded during the past 24 hours until 0830 hours IST on October 19th, 2023. The weather continues to evolve as the Southwest Monsoon recedes.

Transition to Northeast Monsoon

With the onset of Easterlies and Northeasterlies over southern peninsular India, the IMD predicts that the northeast monsoon rainfall activity will begin over the southern peninsular region in the next 72 hours. However, it is expected that the initial phase of the northeast monsoon will be relatively weak.

Weather Warnings and Impacts

  1. Low-Pressure Area over Arabian Sea:
    • The Low-Pressure Area over the Arabian Sea is projected to intensify into a Depression, affecting various regions with squally weather.
    • Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into affected areas due to strong winds and squalls.
  2. Low-Pressure Area over Bay of Bengal:
    • The Low-Pressure Area forming over the Bay of Bengal is also expected to intensify into a Depression, impacting the eastern coastal regions.
    • Similar to the Arabian Sea, fishermen are cautioned against heading into these areas.
