Indian Railways Unveils Ambitious “52 Reforms in 52 Weeks” Initiative for 2026

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw chaired a high-level meeting at Rail Bhawan with Ministers of State V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh, Railway Board Chairman & CEO, and senior officials, marking the New Year with a resolve for transformative changes.

The meeting decided to implement 52 major reforms in 52 weeks throughout 2026, focusing on systemic improvements in efficiency, governance, and service delivery.

Emphasizing safety as a top priority, Vaishnaw highlighted a drastic ~90% reduction in consequential train accidents—from 135 in 2014-15 to just 11 in 2025-26 (till date)—with the goal of bringing it to single digits.

Key focus areas include accelerating AI and advanced technology for enhanced safety, predictive maintenance, and operations; revamping talent management and employee skill development through innovative methods; and major upgrades in food quality, catering, and onboard services.

Officials shared ground-level insights, while the ministry reviewed ongoing infrastructure, maintenance, and capacity enhancement projects. The Railway Ministry reiterated its unwavering commitment to safety, technological advancement, and passenger-centric growth.
