Indian Railways Takes Lead in Job Creation, Directly and Indirectly
In a commendable effort to contribute to employment generation, Indian Railways has emerged as a key player, creating over 40 lakh jobs in the past nine years. As India’s economic situation strengthens day by day, the role of Indian Railways in both direct and indirect employment becomes increasingly significant.
Indian Railways has been actively involved in the creation of employment opportunities, generating over 40 lakh jobs in the last nine years. To boost employment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a job fair on October 22, 2022, under which Indian Railways has provided employment to thousands of individuals.
This year, on October 28, 2023, more than 51,000 candidates received appointment letters during the job fairs, with Indian Railways contributing to the creation of around 14,000 jobs. The job fair has been instrumental in providing employment to approximately 1.5 lakh individuals in the past year alone.
From 2004 to 2014, Indian Railways provided employment to 4,11,224 individuals, while in the nine years from 2014 to 2023, the number rose to 4,99,000. The annual job creation increased from 41,000 in the period 2004-2014 to over 50,000 in the period from 2014 to 2023.
The construction of new tracks has indirectly led to the creation of 33,000 man-days of employment in the past year, providing direct employment to approximately 5 lakh individuals.
Under the Garib Kalyan Rozgar Abhiyan, Indian Railways provided employment to 9,79,557 daily wage workers in six states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, by September 18, 2020.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian Railways successfully conducted the world’s largest online examination, with over 1.11 crore candidates participating. This effort, showcasing transparency in recruitment, is noteworthy.
In the direction of job creation, Indian Railways has initiated the Amrit Bharat Station Yojana, involving the redevelopment of 1309 stations across the country to meet the extensive needs of travelers and provide them with modern amenities. The redevelopment of 508 stations in the initial phase will create employment opportunities directly and indirectly.
Indian Railways continues to progress on numerous infrastructure projects, offering new employment opportunities to thousands. Through ongoing and upcoming projects, Indian Railways is committed to expanding the horizons of employment for countless individuals, contributing to the growth of the nation’s workforce.
