Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Participate in the 10th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus in Jakarta
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh is set to attend the 10th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) in Jakarta, Indonesia, on November 16, 2023. The Defence Minister’s official visit to the Indonesian capital, spanning November 16 to 17, will involve discussions on regional and international security matters during the ADMM-Plus.
Scheduled to address the forum on November 16, Rajnath Singh will engage in bilateral meetings with Defence Ministers from participating countries on the sidelines of the ADMM-Plus. These meetings aim to bolster defence cooperation and enhance mutually beneficial engagements.
Indonesia, as the chair of ADMM-Plus, is hosting the meeting, which serves as the highest defence consultative and cooperative mechanism in ASEAN. The ADMM-Plus platform facilitates security and defence cooperation among ASEAN member states (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) and its eight Dialogue Partners (India, US, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand).
India has been a dialogue partner of ASEAN since 1992, and the inaugural ADMM-Plus took place in Hanoi, Vietnam, on October 12, 2010. Since 2017, ADMM-Plus Ministers have been convening annually to strengthen cooperation among ASEAN and the Plus countries.
The ADMM-Plus fosters practical cooperation through seven Experts Working Groups (EWGs): Maritime Security, Military Medicine, Cyber Security, Peacekeeping Operations, Counter-Terrorism, Humanitarian Mine Action, and Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief (HADR). The upcoming 10th ADMM-Plus will also announce the next set of co-chairs for the cycle 2024-2027. In the current cycle (2021-2024), India is co-chairing the EWG on HADR alongside Indonesia.
