India Poised to Lead in Technology-Driven Diabetes Care, Says Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh
The Minister praised India's growing role as a technology leader and a hub for medical tourism
In a speech delivered at the 3-day World Congress of Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics 2023 (DTechCon 2023), Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh declared that India is ready to take the lead in technology-driven diabetes care. Dr Singh, who is also a renowned diabetologist and professor, stated that India’s handling of the pandemic has earned it a reputation as a global leader in healthcare. He noted that India is ahead of most other countries in terms of technology and human resources.
According to Dr Singh, India’s fast-growing tech sector owes much to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support for science and technology innovations. Dr Singh remarked that Modi has a natural passion for science and that he gives his team a free hand in developing and implementing ideas. As a result of Modi’s policies, India has seen a surge in the number of startups, with over 90,000 now in operation, including more than 100 unicorns. India also ranks as the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem.
Dr Singh cited several examples of Modi’s support for technological innovation in the healthcare sector. For instance, Modi opened up the space sector for private participation, leading to the creation of more than 100 startups in the space sector within just three years. Similarly, biotech startups in India have risen from around 50 in 2014 to nearly 6,000 today.
Dr Singh also highlighted India’s recent approval of the National Quantum Mission, which will boost medical diagnosis and treatment in the country. He noted that India is one of the few countries in the world to have launched a National Quantum Mission.
The Minister praised India’s growing role as a technology leader and a hub for medical tourism. He emphasized that the prevention of diabetes is not only a healthcare duty but also a duty to the nation. With 70% of India’s population under the age of 40, the youth of today are set to become the prime citizens of India@2047, and the country cannot afford to let their energy be sapped by diabetes and its complications.
Dr Singh congratulated the organizers of the DTechCon 2023 for their excellent work in conceptualizing the conference. The conference will cover the latest developments in the field of diabetes technology and therapeutics, with workshops and hands-on training provided to deepen attendees’ understanding of insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring, point of care, and futuristic therapies.
