India Meteorological Department Issues Hourly Update on Severe Cyclonic Storm “Michaung”

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has provided a crucial hourly update on the severe cyclonic storm “Michaung,” as of 0230 HRS IST on December 5, 2023.

Current Location: The severe cyclonic storm “Michaung,” pronounced as “Migjaum,” positioned over the west-central Bay of Bengal off the south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts, has been observed moving north-northwestwards at a speed of 7 kmph over the past six hours. As of 0230 HRS IST, the storm is centered at latitude 14.6°N and longitude 80.2°E, approximately 20 km north-northeast of Nellore, 150 km south of Bapatla, 170 km north of Chennai, and 210 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam.

Current Intensity: The intensity near the center is reported to be 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph.

Past Movement and Forecast: During the past six hours, the cyclonic storm “Michaung” has moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 7 kmph. The forecast indicates that, as the system continues to move nearly northwards close to the coast, some parts of the wall cloud region lie over land. The system is anticipated to move nearly northwards, parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast, and is projected to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla during the forenoon of December 5, 2023, as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph.
