India Meteorological Department Forecasts Heavy Rainfall and Fog Across Several Regions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in certain areas of the country, with isolated heavy spells expected over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Lakshadweep on November 20, 2024.
Rainfall and Weather Warnings
- Heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep over the past 24 hours.
- Dense to very dense fog conditions were reported in pockets of Jammu & Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh, with significant reductions in visibility.
- Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast to continue in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal through November 20 and again on November 26.
- Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Lakshadweep are also expected to experience heavy rainfall during the week, with the potential for very heavy rain in Tamil Nadu later in the week.
Upcoming Weather Systems
- A low-pressure area is expected to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal around November 23, which could bring further rainfall to South Peninsular India, particularly on November 25 and 26.
- Other cyclonic circulations have been observed over the Comorin area and the southeast Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast, contributing to the heavy rainfall forecast.
Fog and Visibility Concerns
- Dense fog is expected to persist in parts of East Uttar Pradesh from late November 20 into November 21, affecting visibility. Dense fog is also anticipated in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Himachal Pradesh between November 22 and 25.
- These foggy conditions could lead to travel disruptions, especially on roads and at airports, with potentially slower journey times and increased risk of accidents.
Temperature Forecast
- Minimum temperatures across much of India have remained steady, with slight variations. Areas like Bihar and Jammu & Kashmir saw temperatures 3°C to 5°C above normal, while regions like Odisha and Telangana experienced temperatures slightly below normal.
- No significant changes in minimum temperatures are expected over the next five days.
Delhi/NCR Weather Update
- Delhi has seen a dip in both maximum and minimum temperatures over the past 24 hours, with the maximum temperature ranging from 23°C to 25°C and the minimum between 8°C and 12°C.
- Shallow fog and smog conditions are expected to continue in the region through November 20-23. Visibility is likely to be low in the mornings, improving by mid-morning.
- The weather is forecast to remain clear during the day, with light winds from the northwest.
Precautions and Advice
- For those traveling in fog-affected areas, the IMD advises taking extra care, especially in the morning and evening hours. Drivers should use fog lights and stay updated on transport schedules.
- The dense fog may also have health implications, particularly for people with respiratory conditions. The public is advised to avoid outdoor activities unless necessary, and to cover their face when outdoors.
- In agricultural regions like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, farmers should ensure proper drainage and provide mechanical support to crops such as rice, sugarcane, and bananas to prevent damage from excessive rainfall.
