IMD Weather Advisory: Isolated Heavy Rainfall Forecast in South India – Latest Updates and Forecasts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory forecasting isolated heavy rainfall in parts of South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala for the next two days. However, this heavy rainfall is expected to reduce after this initial period.

According to IMD reports, no significant weather conditions are anticipated over the rest of the country for the next four to five days.

The IMD’s rainfall data for the past 24 hours ending at 0830 hours IST on October 10, 2023, reveals the following observations (refer to Annexure I for details):

  • Heavy rainfall at isolated places in Tamil Nadu.
  • Significant rainfall recorded in various regions, including Tiruppur, Ramanathapuram, Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai, and Nilgiris, among others.

Moreover, IMD’s weather experts have highlighted several significant weather features:

  • A Western Disturbance has been identified as a cyclonic circulation over Jammu and adjoining Pakistan, with a trough aloft roughly along Long. 72°E to the north of Lat. 32°N.
  • A cyclonic circulation is situated over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal in lower tropospheric levels.
  • A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to impact the Western Himalayan Region and adjoining plains starting from October 13, 2023.

The IMD has also issued weather warnings for the next five days in different regions:

South India: Expect light to moderate rainfall in some areas with isolated heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, in Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka, and Kerala on October 10 and 11, followed by a reduction in rainfall.

Northwest India: Light to moderate rainfall is likely in some places, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, primarily in Kashmir-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on October 10 and during October 13-15. Light rainfall at isolated places is expected over Punjab and North Haryana on October 14 and 15, 2023.

Northeast India: Anticipate light to moderate rainfall in many places, along with thunderstorms and lightning, over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on October 10, with a subsequent reduction in rainfall.

East India: Expect light to moderate rainfall in many places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal in the next 24 hours, followed by a reduction in rainfall. A few spells of light to moderate rainfall/thundershowers are anticipated over Sikkim towards the afternoon and evening.

Central & West India: No significant weather conditions are foreseen in these regions over the next five days.
