IMD Releases Updated Seasonal and Monthly Weather Outlooks for April to June 2024
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its latest seasonal outlook for the hot weather season spanning April to June 2024, along with a detailed monthly forecast for April 2024. The report provides valuable insights into anticipated temperature and rainfall patterns across India during these periods.
Seasonal Outlook (April to June 2024): IMD forecasts above-normal maximum temperatures for most parts of India during the hot weather season, with exceptions in some regions of east and northeast India and pockets of northwest India, where normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are expected. Similarly, normal to above-normal minimum temperatures are likely across most of the country, except for isolated areas in northeast and northwest India, where normal to below-normal minimum temperatures are projected. Additionally, above-normal heatwave days are anticipated over various regions, including south peninsula, central India, east India, and plains of northwest India.
Monthly Outlook (April 2024): For April 2024, IMD predicts above-normal maximum temperatures over the majority of India, while isolated areas in east and northeast India and northwest India may experience normal to below-normal maximum temperatures. Similarly, above-normal monthly minimum temperatures are expected in most parts of the country, except for a few pockets in northwest and northeast India, where normal to below-normal minimum temperatures may occur.
Heatwave Outlook: During both the hot weather season and April 2024, above-normal heatwave days are forecasted over several parts of south peninsula, adjoining northwest central India, east India, and plains of northwest India. Authorities are urged to take proactive measures to mitigate the adverse effects of heatwaves, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Rainfall Outlook for April 2024: IMD predicts normal to above-normal rainfall over many parts of northwest India, central India, north peninsular India, and some areas of east and northeast India during April 2024. However, below normal rainfall is expected along the east and west coasts, as well as in certain parts of west central India.
El Niño and Indian Ocean Dipole Conditions: Currently, moderate El Niño conditions prevail over the equatorial Pacific, with forecasts indicating a weakening trend and a potential transition to neutral conditions. Models also suggest the development of La Niña conditions during the monsoon season. Meanwhile, neutral Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions persist, with positive IOD conditions expected during the monsoon season.
Extended Range Forecasting and Services: IMD offers extended-range forecasts and short to medium-range forecasting services, providing valuable information on rainfall and temperature patterns for the upcoming weeks.
As India braces for the hot weather season and prepares for the associated challenges, IMD’s comprehensive outlook serves as a vital resource for policymakers, authorities, and the general public in planning and mitigating weather-related risks.
