IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall in Northeast India and Central Western States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather forecasts indicating significant rainfall activity in various parts of the country over the next few days. Here are the key highlights of the IMD’s latest weather observations and forecasts:

Past 24-Hour Weather Observations:

  • A cyclonic circulation that was present over central parts of interior Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh has now shifted over southeast Madhya Pradesh, extending upwards to middle tropospheric levels, tilting southwards with height.
  • The Monsoon Trough is currently active and situated to the south of its usual position. It traverses regions from Jaisalmer to Kota, Raisen, Pendra Road, Jamshedpur, Digha, and continues east-southeastwards to the Northeast Bay of Bengal.

Weather Forecast and Warnings:

East India:

  • Expect light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand on the 8th of September.
  • Odisha will experience similar conditions on the 8th and 12th of September.
  • Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal can expect these conditions on the 8th and 9th of September.
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands will see such weather patterns from the 10th to the 12th of September.

South India:

  • Light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated over Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka on the 8th of September.
  • Ghat areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal are expected to experience these conditions from the 8th to the 10th of September.
  • Kerala & Mahe will see similar weather patterns from the 8th to the 11th of September.

Central India:

  • Light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning are forecasted. Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Madhya Pradesh from the 8th to the 10th of September.
  • Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh will also experience these conditions on the 8th of September.
  • Isolated very heavy rainfall is expected over West Madhya Pradesh on the 8th of September.

West India:

  • Anticipate light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Marathwada on the 8th of September.
  • Konkan & Goa and Madhya Maharashtra will see these conditions from the 8th to the 12th of September.
  • Gujarat Region is expected to have similar weather on the 8th and 9th of September.
  • Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Gujarat Region on the 8th of September.

Northeast India:

  • Expect light to moderate, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and isolated heavy rainfall in Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura from the 8th to the 12th of September.
  • Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Assam & Meghalaya on the 8th of September.

Northwest India:

  • Light to moderate, isolated to scattered rainfall, and thunderstorms with isolated heavy rainfall are very likely over southeast Rajasthan on the 8th of September.
  • Uttarakhand will experience similar conditions on the 9th of September.
  • East Uttar Pradesh will have these weather patterns from the 8th to the 10th of September.

  • Extrememly heavy rainfall recorded at isolated places in Konkan & Goa.
  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Jharkhand, Gujarat Region, Madhya Maharashtra, Assam & Meghalaya, Gangetic West Bengal.
  • Heavy rainfall at isolated places in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, East Rajasthan, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Vidarbha, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala & Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

Impact and Action Suggestions Due to Thunderstorms with Lightning:

  • Strong wind/hail may damage crops.
  • Hail may cause injury to people and cattle in open areas.
  • Partial damage to vulnerable structures is possible.
  • Minor damage to kutcha houses, walls, and huts is expected.
  • Loose objects may become projectiles.

Actions to Take:

  • Stay indoors, close windows & doors, and avoid travel if possible.
  • Seek safe shelters and avoid trees.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls.
  • Unplug electrical/electronic appliances.
  • Avoid water bodies.
  • Keep away from objects that conduct electricity.
