IMD Forecasts Intense Rainfall and Snowfall Across Western Himalayas and Northwest Plains

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating the likelihood of an intense spell of rainfall and snowfall activity over the Western Himalayan Region from February 18th to 21st, 2024. Additionally, plains in Northwest India are expected to experience similar weather conditions from February 19th to 21st, 2024.

This forecast comes in light of two distinct weather systems impacting the region. Firstly, a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies extending along Long. 55°E to the north of Lat. 30°N is expected to influence weather patterns. Secondly, a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan and neighboring regions, along with an induced cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan in lower tropospheric levels, are likely to contribute to the anticipated weather conditions.

The IMD predicts the following weather phenomena under the influence of these systems:

  • Western Himalayan Region: Expect fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning from February 18th to 21st, 2024. Heavy to very heavy rainfall/snowfall is likely at isolated places in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh during February 18th to 20th, with Uttarakhand experiencing similar conditions on February 19th and 20th. Hailstorm activity is also expected at isolated places in Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on various dates.
  • Plains of Northwest India: Anticipate scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh from February 19th to 21st. Similar weather conditions are expected in East Uttar Pradesh from February 20th to 22nd, along with isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Hailstorm activity is also likely at isolated places in Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, north Rajasthan, and West Uttar Pradesh.

The IMD has issued state-wise forecasts detailing expected weather conditions and suggested actions due to heavy rainfall/snowfall, thunderstorms with lightning/gusty winds, and hailstorms. These actions include precautions to minimize the potential impact on infrastructure, agriculture, and public safety.

The IMD’s comprehensive forecast aims to prepare residents and authorities for the anticipated weather conditions, enabling timely action to mitigate risks and ensure public safety. Citizens are advised to stay updated with weather bulletins and adhere to precautionary measures to minimize any adverse effects of the forecasted weather phenomena.
