First Base Slab Cast for Mumbai Underground Bullet Train Station

The first concrete base slab of the Mumbai Underground Bullet Train station was successfully cast at a depth of approximately 32 meters from the ground level, equivalent to the height of a 10-story building. This marks a significant milestone in the construction of Mumbai’s underground station for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor.

The station is being constructed using the bottom-up method, starting with excavation at ground level and progressing with concrete work from the foundation upwards. The first base slab measures 30 meters in length, 20 meters in width, and 3.5 meters in depth. This slab is the first of 69 slabs planned for the station and will form the deepest level of the station’s construction.

Key Features of the First Base Slab:

  • Reinforcement: 681 MT of high-grade steel
  • Rebar Couplers: 6,200 used in the construction
  • Concrete: 2,254 cubic meters of M60 grade concrete
  • Aggregates: 4,283 MT used in the slab’s foundation

Concrete was supplied through two in-situ batching plants with a capacity of 120 m³ each. The pouring process was carefully managed with temperature control measures, keeping the pouring temperature below 25°C using ice and chiller plants to ensure optimal setting conditions. Waterproofing measures were also applied before the slab casting to prevent any future leakage.

About the Mumbai Bullet Train Station:

The Mumbai Bullet Train station, located at Bandra Kurla Complex, is the only underground station on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. The station platform will be situated 24 meters below ground, with a total excavation depth reaching 32 meters.

The station will consist of three floors, including the platform, concourse, and service levels. Once completed, it will feature six platforms, each approximately 415 meters long, enough to accommodate a 16-coach bullet train.

The station will be well-connected, with entry and exit points designed to link it to the nearby Metro Line 2B and the MTNL building. Additionally, dedicated skylights will provide natural lighting throughout the station, ensuring a well-lit and airy environment for passengers.

This project represents a major leap forward in India’s ambitious high-speed rail network, setting the stage for a new era of fast and efficient rail travel in the country.
