Delhi Customs Preventive Seizes Illegally Imported Foreign-Origin Cigarettes Valued at Rs. 2 Crore
In a recent crackdown, Delhi Customs Preventive has successfully seized 12.22 lakh foreign-origin cigarettes with an estimated value of Rs. 2 crore. Acting on specific information, a case was booked on January 20/21, 2024, against the illicit import and storage of these cigarettes.
Various brands such as ESSE, Mond, Dunhill, Davidoff, Gudang Garam, and Platinum Seven were among the seized cigarettes. Preliminary scrutiny suggests that the value of the confiscated goods is approximately Rs. 2 crore, with exact valuation still underway.
The operation involved the search of two shops and three godowns located in the Katra Bariyan, Nayabans, Delhi-06 locality. The investigation revealed that these establishments were engaged in the illegal import, storage, and supply of various foreign-origin cigarette brands. Notably, the cigarette packets lacked specified statutory health warnings, making them subject to taxation under the Customs Act, 1962.
Authorities suspect that these cigarettes were smuggled into the country without paying Customs duty, in violation of the Cigarettes & other Tobacco Products (Packaging & Labelling) Amendment Rules, 2022. The absence of mandatory health warnings raises concerns about their potential distribution in the domestic market.
The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the roles of suppliers, dealers, and other stakeholders involved in the illicit trade. Delhi Customs Preventive remains committed to addressing such illegal activities and ensuring compliance with customs regulations and health standards.
