Cyclonic Storm Likely to Intensify in Bay of Bengal, Heavy Rainfall Expected

A low-pressure area is expected to form over the same region on May 7th, which may develop into a depression by May 8th

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal by tomorrow, May 6th, 2023. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the same region on May 7th, which may develop into a depression by May 8th.

The system is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm, moving nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal, with details of its path and intensification to be provided after the formation of the low-pressure area. The IMD has advised constant monitoring of the system, as it is still evolving.

In association with the cyclogenesis over the Bay of Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places with isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 7th. The heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected during May 8th-10th, and the sea condition is likely to be rough on May 7th and very rough from May 8th onwards over the Southeast Bay of Bengal.

The wind speed is also expected to increase, with squally weather reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea on May 7th. The wind speed would gradually increase becoming 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea during May 8th and 9th and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and north Andaman Sea from May 10th onwards.

Moreover, the wind speed would gradually increase, becoming 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph over the Southeast and adjoining Central Bay of Bengal from May 10th onwards. With the expected rough sea conditions, fishermen, small ships, boats, and trawlers are advised not to venture into the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas from May 7th onwards and into the adjoining Central Bay of Bengal from May 9th onwards.

Tourism and offshore activities and shipping over Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to be regulated during May 8th-12th, while shipping activity over the sea areas of the Southeast and Central Bay of Bengal is expected to be regulated during May 8th-12th. Those who are currently over the Southeast Bay of Bengal are advised to return to safer places before May 7th, and those over the Central Bay of Bengal are advised to return before May 9th.

The IMD has urged people to remain alert and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this time
