Cyclonic Activity Update: ‘Tej’ in Arabian Sea and ‘Hamoon’ in Bay of Bengal

(A) ‘Tej’ in Westcentral Arabian Sea

The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Tej,’ pronounced as ‘Tej,’ continues its northwestward journey over the Westcentral Arabian Sea. As of 1730 hours IST on October 23, it is positioned near latitude 15.4°N and longitude 52.6°E, approximately 240 km south-southwest of Salalah (Oman) and 90 km southeast of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). ‘Tej’ is expected to maintain its northwestward trajectory and is forecasted to make landfall along the Yemen coast, near Al-Ghaidah, during the midnight hours of October 23 to early hours of October 24. At landfall, it is expected to be classified as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, with wind speeds ranging between 125-135 kmph, gusting to 150 kmph.

(B) ‘Hamoon’ in Westcentral Bay of Bengal

The Deep Depression over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal has displayed intensification trends. It has transitioned into a Cyclonic Storm ‘Hamoon,’ pronounced as ‘Hamoon.’ At 1730 hours IST on October 23, it was centered near latitude 18.3°N and longitude 87.3°E, situated about 230 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 360 km south of Digha (West Bengal), and 510 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). ‘Hamoon’ is expected to further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal in the next 12 hours. Its projected path is nearly north-northeastwards, with a landfall forecasted between Khepupara and Chittagong along the Bangladesh coast around noon on October 25, where it is expected to make landfall as a Deep Depression.
